Kentile Sign May Have New Home Under Subway Tracks
Kentile Floors Sign, the iconic sign that could once be seen from the F train near the Smith-9th Street station, might have a new home underneath the subway tracks.
The Gowanus Alliance is hoping to install the dismantled Kentile Floors sign underneath the elevated subway tracks on 10th Street between 2nd and 3rd avenues.
“We see an opportunity to return the Kentile sign and link Gowanus’ past with its future,” Paul Basile, president of the Gowanus Alliance, told DNAinfo.
The Gowanus Alliance became caretakers of the sign after it was taken down last summer.
They are working with Gowanus by Design to create a rendering to show how the letters could be displayed, including potentially suspending them from trusses that support the elevated subway tracks of the F and G lines.
Once they have a completed plan for how and where to set up the sign, the Gowanus Alliance will seek grant funding and sponsorship from local business to put sign up in its new location.
