Kensington’s Most Dangerous Intersections

Ocean Parkway and 18th Avenue and Ocean Parkway and Foster Avenue are the two most dangerous intersections in our neighborhood, with 11 pedestrians having been injured at the first site and 10 pedestrians being hurt at the latter in the past two years, according to DNAinfo’s recent analysis of NYPD data.

After combing through numbers from the police, DNAinfo compiled a list of the 10 most dangerous intersections in Kensington in a helpful, though frightening, analysis of our area streets that have gotten quite a bit of attention from city Department of Transportation officials following the death of 14-year-old Mohammad Naiem Uddin, who was killed by a hit-and-run driver around Caton Avenue and E. 7th Street.

Following Ocean Parkway and 18th Avenue and Ocean and Foster, the eight worst intersections for pedestrian injuries are, according to DNAinfo’s report:

  • Church Avenue and Coney Island Avenue
  • Ocean Parkway and Avenue C
  • Ocean Parkway and Cortelyou Road
  • Ocean Parkway and Ditmas Avenue
  • Ocean Parkway and Beverley Road
  • Ditmas Avenue and E. 3rd Street
  • Coney Island Avenue and Newkirk Avenue
  • Avenue C and E. 3rd Street

While these streets, with a heavy emphasis on the always problematic Ocean Parkway, are a concern, DNAinfo rightfully points out that there’s  “reason for hope.”

That light at the end of the tunnel stems, in part, from DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg and other transit officials recently announcing a series of major safety upgrades for our neighborhood, particularly in the area near the incoming PS/IS 437 – a school that’s being built where Naiem Uddin was hit.

What do you think needs to happen at these intersections to make them safer? What other area roads would you like the city to pay attention to?
