Kale Sale At PS 295 Farmers Market

School might be out, but the PS 295 Farmers Market is still open every Thursday from 2:30-4:30pm on 19th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues. This week, they’re running a special on kale — just $2 per bundle.

The best thing about kale is that it’s so versatile — you can eat it raw in a salad, or braise it for a side dish, or roast it into chips. And don’t throw out the stems, since you can eat those too!

You can also stock up on kale and freeze it for later. Just wash and chop it (including the stems) and cook it part of the way through in oil and a little bit of water. Once it’s wilted, let it cool before packing it into a zip-top bag, pressing all the air out, and popping it into the freezer to add to pastas and soups later on.

But of course, as much as we love it, we can’t survive on kale alone. Also this week at the market: bacon, beef sticks, beets, blueberries, butter, carrots, cherries, corn, cried apples, eggs, garlic, cheese (chevre and smoked gouda), honey, jam, maple syrup, onions, potatoes, sausages, and squash.
