Join Green-Wood As They Restore Glory To Creighton April 15
It’s said that James Creighton was one of the greatest baseball players that ever lived. Tragically, the 21-year-old phenom died playing the game that he loved in 1862, and was buried in our very own Green-Wood Cemetery. His monument, according to Green-Wood, “quickly took its place in the pantheon of baseball meccas – his obelisk, topped with an iconic lemon-peel baseball (in marble), became a place of pilgrimage.”
The marble baseball disappeared long ago, but thanks to the efforts of Green-Wood historian Jeff Richman, baseball historian Tom Gilbert, and other fans, the monument is once again whole. To celebrate, the cemetery will host an official rededication on Tuesday, April 15, from 1pm to 3pm. The free event will include a trolley ride to the gravesite, with details from Jeff Richman and Tom Gilbert of baseball sites along the way.
RSVP is appreciated so that organizers know how many folks to expect. To secure your spot, visit the Green-Wood Cemetery website.
