Incident At The Landmark Park Slope Reminds Us To Secure Items On Decks
Broken Glass In Front Of Landmark Park Slope

We’ve had a few days recently with pretty strong wind gusts, including this past weekend, when we heard about an incident at the Landmark Park Slope (267 6th St at 4th Ave), a fancy rental building that opened just a few months ago. Neighbors noticed a large amount of glass on the sidewalk just outside the 6th Street entrance, which they said wasn’t cleared for at least a day, possibly two, and when we passed by on Monday there were still some shards on the sidewalk and in the tree pit, as shown above. So where did the glass come from?

You can see pictures of one of the decks on the building’s site, which shows wicker tables with glass tops, though the outdoor area that looks onto 6th Street is near a grill and is more of a dining area, and so it has several large tables with glass tops.

TNG Management, which handles the building, tells us that a “a glass table on the terrace that blew over and the top shattered on to the terrace. The wind then blew some of the glass off of the terrace onto the sidewalk. The table itself never left the terrace.”

A neighbor says that the amount of glass on the sidewalk seemed like a lot more than what could have just blown from the terrace, but was more concerned about the slow response from the building to address the issue and to clean it up, particularly considering how the Landmark has been marketed as a luxury building with excellent amenities, including a free year of concierge service.

As more strong wind gusts are expected in the forecast for the next day or so, we asked the building’s management what precautions they are taking, and they said they’ve told tenants to bring in any terrace furniture. We’ve also heard that they’ve taken all of the furniture from the roof and the terrace areas, and that they’ve told tenants they will refurnish those spaces in the spring.

So be careful with any stuff you’ve got in outdoor areas, especially ones that are high up! And if you live in a building with outdoor spaces, it might not hurt to contact your management to ask how secure everything is.
