Hurricane Irene-Related Event Cancellations In The Area
I think it is fair to say that, given the severity of the warnings we are receiving about the monster hurricane headed our way, all fun and outdoorsy events scheduled for Sunday, August 28 either are or will be canceled. According to Brooklyn.com, “Due to the hurricane, the city has revoked all permits for events to take place on Sunday,” so if you were planning to go to the Brighton Jubilee, or the Afro-Punk Festival in Commodore Barry Park, you are — in the parlance of our times — s.o.l.
If you are unsure about whether an event you were hoping to attend is canceled or not, call event organizers ahead of time or check the event website, although you probably have more important things to worry about, such as creating your “Go Bag,” than trying to determine if the green market is open… because it won’t be.
The latest cancellation, in addition to the cancellation postponement of the Brighton Jubilee, is the History Day and the Coney Island Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, rescheduled from August 28 to September 3 from 1 to 5 p.m. From the Coney Island History Project, we received the following email:
Celebrate historic Coney Island with us next Saturday at the 1st Annual History Day at Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park and the Coney Island History Project. The festivities include live music, entertainment and a Coney Island Trivia Contest. We’ll send out an e-news next week with an updated schedule. The events are free to the public and will be held at the Wonder Wheel, the Coney Island History Project and throughout Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park.
Additionally, if you were planning on seeing the Brooklyn Cyclones do battle with the Hudson Valley Renegades on Sunday, that game has also been canceled and instead will be played as a double header tonight. From the Cyclones’ website:
With the forecast for this weekend calling for strong storms, coupled with warnings of high tide and potential flooding on Coney Island, Sunday’s game has been cancelled and will instead be played as part of a doubleheader Friday starting at 5:30 PM. Both games will be seven innings and those with tickets for Sunday’s game can exchange them for any game during the remainder of the 2011 regular season. For complete details, read the entire rain check policy that is printed on the back of the tickets, or written below.
Finally, our friends over at Sean Casey Animal Rescue have also canceled an adoption event slated for tomorrow. From their facebook page:
Due to the impending bad weather, our adoption event for tomorrow has been cancelled. But our animals are still in need of loving homes, so if you would like to adopt please visit our shelter at 153 E. 3 St. between Ft Hamilton Pkwy and Caton Ave…we are open from 11-7.
And on that note, I hope everyone stays safe and out of harm’s way. Be armed with your “Go Bag,” know what zone you reside in (click the map in the link to go directly to nyc.gov’s map of “New York City Hurricane Evacuation Zones”), know where to go if you need to evacuate and also, a personal plea from yours truly, please make sure your pets are safe.
Provided our homes don’t end up riding waves for 40 days and 40 nights all the way to the summits of Mount Ararat, Sheepshead Bites will keep you updated on any new Irene-related developments.
