How Do Area Schools Stack Up After Common Core ELA Tests?

DNAInfo released a map yesterday showing the percentage of fourth graders who passed this year’s English Language Arts test in each of the 700+ schools across NYC. Here’s a look at how area schools fared with the new, more rigorous state ELA exams:

PS 10: 62.73% passed, making it #36 citywide. Last year, 72.8% of students passed, making it #136 citywide.

PS 39: 77.8% passed, making it #8 citywide. Last year, 85.1% of students passed, making it #45 citywide.

PS 107: 68.29% passed, making it #17 citywide. Last year, 88.6% of students passed, making it #29 citywide.

PS 124: 14.63% passed, making it #489 citywide. Last year, 51.0% of students passed, making it #351 citywide.

PS 172: 68.29% passed, making it #17 citywide. Last year, 97.5% of students passed, making it #4 citywide.

PS 295: 35.29% passed, making it #197 citywide. Last year, 56.9% of students passed, making it #281 citywide.

There are varied interpretations on what this year’s scores mean–while it seems most parents and teachers are in some way concerned by the drop in the amount of students passing, some say it’s to be expected with new tests, and students will be able to meet Common Core standards in the near future. Looking at this and last year’s rankings for local schools, though, what’s your take on the matter?
