History at Home: This Day in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle

As we wander about our modern neighborhood, caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it’s easy to ignore the long and vibrant history of our community. Let’s remedy that. Every weekend, we’ll take a step back, with the help of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle archives, and explore what was happening around South Slope over a century ago.

On this day in 1896, the proprietor of Michael Nolan’s saloon, located at 686 6th Avenue (where’s Toby’s Public House is today), was arrested for violating the Raines Law, which prohibited the sale of alcohol on Sundays.

Forget the guy that tried to take out his wife on Adams Street, the Eagle was going after some serious criminals on April 14, 1897.

Finally, an early morning fire on April 13, 1898 left a bakery located at 426 5th Avenue (where Square Stores is located today) with about $1,000 in damage.
