Health and Wellness Open House This Wednesday: Giveaways, Activities, Info, and More!

It’s too often the case that we Flatbushers (Flatbushnicks? Flatbushians?) are unaware of some stellar resources available to us right in our own neighborhood. Maybe even on our own block.

Sure, we notice those quaint signs for doctors, dentists, or psychiatrists outside stately Victorians along tree-lined streets. But we also have excellent options for health and medical care along our busier thoroughfares. One is the Church Avenue Family Health Center, The Brooklyn Hospital Center’s newest family health center.

If you’re not already familiar with the center – or even if you are – there will be a community open house this Wednesday, May 24, from 11am to 4pm at 2244 Church Avenue. And it doesn’t matter who you are, what insurance you have (or if you have any), or what your needs are – they want everyone to come out and visit the center.

“We’re just looking to reach everyone in the Flatbush community around our center,” said Gloria Ayide, the Director of Cancer Services of Brooklyn. She’s one of the project managers organizing the open house. She’s also been working with the hospital for 18 years – the kind of staff longevity that’s always a good sign.

The open house will begin with some opening remarks at noon from State Senator Kevin Parker. Organizers say other civic and elected officials have been invited but have not been confirmed.

At the open house, you’ll find neighborhood vendors – currently 29 of them – who will be offering information on their services as well as free giveaways. There will also be a raffle. Vendors will include:

Organizers explain that one of the main purposes of the open house is to showcase the center’s specialty providers, whom attendees will have the opportunity to meet. Their many specialties include primary care, cardiology, podiatry, pediatrics, dentistry, OB/GYN, and HIV/STD Care.

Cancer Services of Brooklyn, Ayide’s organization that runs a comprehensive cancer screening program for uninsured men and women, will be offering information on various preventative screenings, such as mammographies and colorectal screening. Attendees will have the opportunity to sign up for future screening appointments as well as receive blood pressure and blood glucose testing right there at the event.
