Happy Spring! Happy Vernal Equinox!
Today we have 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night. The sun rose in the exact east and will set in the exact west. We will continue gaining daylight until the Summer Solstice on June 21. Happy Equinox!
Time for spring planting!
Our last sign of winter, yesterday, was snow. While the probability of another snow or even a hard freeze is low–it could happen up to April 11–It’s time to start thinking plants.
Almanac.com has a wonderful planting table.
If you want to start seeds inside, there is still some time, barely. Brooklyn Seed Company sells seeds selected specifically for city habitat. If you prefer to buy starts, J&L Landscaping (702 Caton Ave) and Shannon Nursery & Florist (3380 Ft. Hamilton Pkwy) sell both seeds and starts as well as other gardening tools. Need a little more time? The Brooklyn Botanical Garden Plant Sale will be April 30 to May 2.
What are your favorite signs of spring?
I know it’s spring when Magnolias bloom.
How do you know spring is here? A certain flower? A specific bird’s song? Kids splashing in puddles? Post, in the comments, your favorite sign of spring.
