Gun Control Remains A Concern For Residents And Politicians Following Recent Shootings

Last Friday, September 25 began with hundreds of people from across New York City arriving at Emmanuel Baptist Church to pay their respects to Carey A. Gabay, the former lawyer and aide to Governor Andrew Cuomo who was shot in the head over Labor Day weekend as he walked home with family from the J’Ouvert West Indian American Day weekend festivities.

The day ended with shots fired — but no one injured — inside a ninth floor stairwell at one of the Lafayette Gardens buildings, when police on patrol spotted a man with a gun at around 11:45pm. The suspect allegedly “aimed his pistol at the cops but the officers fired off two rounds before he could fire, sending the suspect scurrying,” according to the New York Daily News. The suspect remains on the loose.

At Gabay’s funeral, Cuomo decried the spread of gun violence. stating in his eulogy that “the violence has become so brutal, so aimless, that the most innocent can be struck down anytime, anywhere. . . maybe there’s nothing you can do about it. If only that were true — it’s not.”

The eulogy also followed the triple homicide of three men in the Ingersoll Houses last week.
