Guacamaya Cafe On Cortelyou Is Finally Open!
After cracking the case of the mysterious sign outside 1017 Cortelyou Road, we’re happy to finally announce that Guacamaya Venezuelan eatery is open, and delicious.
As we were walking by last night, a gregarious woman with a thick accent shouted from inside, “It’s all delicious! You must come in and taste!”
“Our empanadas and arepas have been flying,” she told us.
Once inside, we couldn’t resist ordering one of everything, and ended up with a feast of colorful fried treats.
The corn shell is a unique feature of the Venezuelan empanada, and added a subtle sweetness and hearty texture to the juicy beef filling.
The Reina Pepiada Arepa (chicken, avocado, and mayo, $7) was my favorite — thick slices of avocado and slivers of grilled chicken inside a lightly grilled corn shell. Although the Arepas look small, one order was a very filling snack. Though on second thought, the Domino Arepa (also $7), with black beans and white cheese bursting from the pocket, could fill a serious hunger pang.
The kitchen occupies most of this tiny cafe, but the four window seats are for people watching, and chatting with the friendly staff.
Stop by Guacamaya this Saturday, June 18, for their grand opening party, featuring free tastings between 12pm and 2pm.
As of last night the restaurant had no take out menus printed, so here is a copy of the full offerings below.
