Get Your Pi On in South Slope Today

Friends, neighbors, Slopians, lend me your ears. St. Patrick’s Day may be Sunday, but today, TODAY, is a day of awakening. Today is Pi Day.

The official Pi Day website explains that, “Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159.”

It’s a day to show the world that mathematics can be fun. (Editor straightens her glasses, and gives a snorting laugh).

Seriously, though, who doesn’t love Pi? Pi is irrational. Pi is transcendental. Pi will continue through infinity and beyond. Pi is good.

In honor of Pi, we’ve put together  a list of South Slope ways to celebrate:

•    Run and/or walk around Bartel-Pritchard Circle. You could also kick it up a notch and carry Pi placards (hang on to ’em tight, though…it’s crazy windy outside).

•    After you spread the pi love around Bartel-Prichard Circle, walk over to the Pavilion and catch a showing of Oz the Great and Powerful. We have a feeling that the Wizard of Oz was totally into pi. How could he not be? There’s a giant circle in his name.

•    Nosh on some circular food. Grab a crepe from Crespella Caffe, a black and white cookie from Leske’s, a bowl of soup from Naidre’s, or a pie from Luigi’s Pizza.

•    Visit the Park Slope Branch Library, and have a little Einstein education session (the genius celebrated his birthday on 3/14).

•    Finally, amaze friends with the knowledge that 3.14 backward spells PIE.
