Get Your Pancake Fix At Pete’s Breakfast Pop-Up In 620 On Caton Pizza
When trying to figure out where to grab an early morning bite, the local pizza joint usually isn’t on the top of the list. Not that we don’t love pizza for breakfast, but they just usually don’t open before 11am.
Local chef Pete Tirado has taken advantage of that fact and recently opened Pete’s Breakfast, a pop-up breakfast spot located inside 620 On Caton Pizza (620 Caton Avenue), open from 6am-11:30am daily.
Pete, who has been cooking in various fine restaurants for 25 years, decided he wanted to strike out on his own now that his youngest child is in kindergarten. But opening your own restaurant can be tough, so a mutual friend connected him with 620 On Caton, who’s owner wanted someone to rent the space during the morning hours.
Pete started serving breakfast at the beginning of October and we stopped by on Sunday morning, after hearing that the pancakes were worth the trip.
Pete does all of the cooking so the menu is pretty simple but everything is delicious. “I’m in the back a lot but I try to peek around and get to know my customers,” says Pete. And he already has quite a few regulars who have been raving about his breakfasts.
We ordered a simple eggs and sausage breakfast ($7.50), a Western Omelet ($8.50) and an order of Golden Hot Cakes ($5.50) — a simple straightforward breakfast but everything was perfectly cooked.
Our eggs were perfectly over easy and tasted delicious over the herb roasted potatoes, cooked with rosemary and thyme, and the sausage links were heartier than your typical breakfast sausage.
The Western Omelet was packed full of ham and peppers. The omelets are made with three eggs so it makes for a filling breakfast.
But the true standout was the Golden Hot Cakes, which were thick, fluffy and perfectly cooked. We could eat these cakes everyday.
Pete also serves egg sandwiches and breakfast wraps for those on the go. He says the wraps have been very popular so far. We’re looking forward to trying the Greek Wrap ($7), which is served with two eggs, spinach, feta cheese and tomatoes.
Pete says things have been going well so far and he hopes to be able to open his own restaurant in the neighborhood in the near future where he can expand the menu to include lunch and maybe eventually dinner. Based on his breakfast, we’re sure that he’ll have no trouble bringing people in.
Pete’s Breakfast, 620 Caton Avenue, is open seven days a week from 6am to 11:30am.
