Get The Inside Scoop At Fort Greene & Clinton Hill Institutions During Open House NY

Ever wondered about the stories behind Kings County Distillery, the Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew, or the buildings at Pratt? You can find the answers to these questions and more next weekend, when Open House New York explores some of Fort Greene and Clinton Hill’s most fascinating places.

OHNY and local organizations will hold the following events October 10-12 (starred events mean reservations are necessary, and will be available at 11am on Wednesday, October 1):

Factory Friday: Ferra Designs*
63 Flushing Avenue, Bldg 275
Friday, October 10, 10am
Learn about metal fabrication at Ferra Designs, based in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. “You may see welding or you may see water jets,” OHNY says, “but you will certainly see industry in action!”

All About Wallabout Tour*

The Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership leads this 1.5 mile tour of wood framed houses and other notable structures from the neighborhood’s 400 year history.

BRICArts Media House Tour with Leeser Architecture
647 Fulton Street at Rockwell Place
Saturday, October 11, 2pm
247 Fulton Street was built in 1918, having been originally designed by architect Thomas Lamb. Leeser Architecture was responsible for renovations to the building in 2013, which they’ll walk you through on your tour. The building is open all weekend for casual perusal–see link to learn more.

Brooklyn Academy of Music Ongoing Tours
30 Lafayette Avenue between Ashland and St Felix Places
Saturday, October 11, 10am-1pm
BAM’s Opera House, designed by Herts & Tallant in 1908, is housed inside Fort Greene’s iconic Peter J. Sharp building. BAM Archives Manager Louie Fleck and Archivist Sharon Lehner will lead a tour of the space, which may also include a tour of BAM’s Fisher Building.

Sustainability Scavenger Hunt at the Brooklyn Navy Yard
63 Flushing Avenue, Bldg 92
Saturday, October 11, 1-4pm
Kids and families can learn how BLDG 92 has been transformed into a green building with LEED certifications during this interactive event, and get artsy at a “These are the People of Your Navy Yard” coloring station. Building open all weekend–see here for more.

Tours at the Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew
520 Clinton Avenue between Fulton Street and Atlantic Avenue
Saturday, October 11, 10am-4pm; Sunday, October 12, 1-4pm
Tours will be lead all weekend through this spectacular late 19th century building, which features Tiffany windows and a rose window measuring 28 ft in diameter, and has been restored following damage from a 2012 fire.

Kings County Distillery Tour*
63 Flushing Avenue, Bldg 121
Saturday, October 11 and Sunday, October 12, 10am-2pm
Located in the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s historic Navy Paymaster’s Office, this tour will center around the 1889 building’s rich history, as well as the spirits made within. Visitors will learn about Kings County‘s distilling process, and get to taste some whiskey for themselves.

Architectural Tours at Pratt
61 Saint James Place at Clifton Place
Saturday, October 11, 10am, 11:30am, and 1pm
Buildings at Pratt span the decades, from 1885 structures to the ultra modern Higgins Hall, where visitors will meet. Each tour of the architecturally diverse campus will last one hour.

UrbanGlass Studio Tour*
647 Fulton Street at Rockwell Place
Saturday, October 11, 1pm
Our local glassmaking studio will be providing a guided walk through its 17,000 sq ft facilities. Check out UrbanGlass‘ kilns, flameworking area, works in neon, and more. An UrbanGlass exhibition will also be open throughout the day–see here for more details.

Prison Ship Martyrs Monument Lecture
Fort Greene Park
Sunday, October 12, 11am-3pm
Guests won’t get a tour of the monument, per se, but an ongoing talk by Urban Park Rangers will address its history, meaning, and construction.
