Gershburg Gives Back Free Bankruptcy Services
Sheepshead Bites is bringing back Tuesday Tips, a series of articles from local experts to help you save money, make better decisions and plan for a better future. For veteran tipster Daniel Gershburg’s first column since his hiatus, he’s making a very special offer to Sheepshead Bites readers.
After opening up my own law firm almost four years ago on the corner of Voorhies Avenue and Sheepshead Bay Road, I have worked diligently to give back to those who helped our firm flourish.
When we first started, we basically handled everything that came in the door. We had to. Rent is expensive. So are loans. In any event, we found success in this community, and we were able to move offices, expand, open a second office in Manhattan, and narrow our focus to two primary fields of law, bankruptcy and real estate.
When I was in law school, I was told that it is not only a good thing to give back your services to the community on a pro bono level, but it’s expected. So I began working with the Brooklyn Bar Association’s Volunteer Lawyers Project several years ago, doing bankruptcy filings for indigent clients for free. That’s been an incredibly rewarding experience; however, almost all of those clients were outside the Sheepshead Bay/Manhattan Beach community that has supported by firm.
So here’s what I’d like to do: because we’re all in this economic mess together, I’d like to offer free bankruptcy services to those unemployed in our community with high credit card debt and/or who may be in the midst of a foreclosure.
The only fees you’d pay are the $299 filing fee to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court Eastern District, a $50 Credit Report Fee, and a fee to a Credit Counseling agency for a certificate you need in order to file. No fees whatsoever to my firm. I’m doing this not only because I think it’s right, but because it’s necessary for our community.
To those other readers who are employed but may have questions about large amounts of debt, I’m more than willing to offer free consultation and to talk one on one for as long as you need and to answer any questions you have.
Thanks again for all of the support.
