Gardening at PS 139

Parents and students of PS 139 are taking advantage of the beautiful weather on this school holiday by digging in the dirt. Jocelyn Lucas Rosenberg reports that the school was awarded a Grow to Learn Mini-Grant, which they’ll be using to grow flowers, herbs, and vegetables in the plots in front of the playground on Cortelyou Road. They’ll also begin composting, and more. Students from each class will be getting involved in the garden, and they hope to incorporate some of the things they grow into the cafeteria menu.

The daffodils from the boxes will be transplanted along the front edge of the fence, so the boxes can be used for vegetables and herbs.

If you see them out there, today or in the future, be sure to give them some encouragement! If you’ve got a shovel and want to help, stop by. Can’t wait to see what they grow.
