There are no suspect sketches or other identifying descriptions of the person who shot a 36-year-old man inside one of the Walt Whitman Houses last Friday in the early evening hours, but police are open to any information that witnesses and residents may have to share.

According to an NYPD spokesperson, the investigation is ongoing in the shooting incident, which occurred at 6:35pm inside 99 North Portland Avenue and left the victim in stable condition at the hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg.

One shot was fired, the spokesperson said, and the victim reportedly only heard, not saw, the shot and shooter.

The incident left behind a “very visible trail of blood that led from the building onto the sidewalk and on the street headed to Park [Avenue],” though, said neighbor Ken Stier, who walked by the crime scene as “a large contingent of NYPD” and emergency services converged on the area, which sits across from Cumberland Diagnostic.

“What was striking was you could see the outlines of [the victim’s] shoe – probably sneakers – suggesting they were overflowing with blood,” said Stier.

Another passersby was overheard muttering to himself, “Oh, I got to move from here.”

Police have not confirmed the identity of the victim yet.
