Fort Greene’s Cat Cafe Is Averaging An Adoption A Day And Planning Pet Workshops

The Cat’s Meow — Fort Greene’s own pop-up cat cafe, at 354 Myrtle Avenue — has been open for a week now and is already meeting an average of one adoption a day! That’s great news and right in line with the shop’s mission to both get cats adopted and to educate human pet lovers/pet owners about both animal and human health and relationships.

“Most cat cafes are for-profit, but for us, the priority is to get cats adopted, to educated, entertain, and to raise awareness of the aspects of having animals in the city,” explained cafe manager Anne Levin, who is also president of the Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition (BBAWC). “You shouldn’t have to be fabulously wealthy in order to have a pet.”

To that end, admission to the cafe is only $5 per half hour, with children aged three and under welcome for free, and adoption fees for an adult cat at the cafe is $100, which includes the cost of spaying/neutering, vaccinations, and microchipping. Adoptions should begin with an application at the shop or online through BBAWC.

Levin and Julia Rosenfeld of co-cafe-sponsor Who’s Your Doggy — the local pet supplies shop currently at Willoughby and Adelphi that will move into the cafe space come November 1 — have noted that traffic has been fantastic, with a steady stream of cat lovers coming through the doors.

And with names like Dewey Decimal, Bobbles, Milkface, Moose and Squirrel, the Jackson 5 (five kittens with each Jackson’s name), Three’s Company (Jack, Janet, and Chrissy), and Jack-O-Lantern, and personalities ranging from playful to snuggly, it’s no wonder why these cats are finding homes so quickly.

On the education front, The Cat’s Meow is gearing up for educational workshops and fun classes for October. Classes will cover topics such as alternative therapy for pets, acupuncture, senior pet needs, Rescue 101, a vaccine clinic, trap-neuter-release class, and human events like movie night, yoga class, and single’s night.

The first class is this Wednesday, September 30 from 7-9pm — a Vaccine Clinic for dogs and cats, featuring Dr. Angelo Rosado. If you can’t make this one, there will be more vaccine clinics on October 7, 14, and 21.

Following that will be a TNR (trap-neuter-release) class on Thursday, October 1 from 5:45-9:15pm. To register for the workshop, sign up here: https://fs10.formsite.com/NCats/workhop/index.html.

Hours are Wednesday through Sundays from 11am to 5pm, with Friday hours extended to 8pm for the after-work wind-down before the weekend crowd.
