Man Dies In Police Custody After Being Handcuffed in Flatlands
FLATLANDS – A man died after being arrested by police officers responding to a call in Flatlands early yesterday morning.
Just before 6:00 am, on Tuesday, October 23, police responded to a call of a family dispute at an East 58th Street residence near Flatlands Avenue.
At the scene, police handcuffed a 23-year-old man they described as “acting irrationally.”
According to police, as they escorted the man to a waiting ambulance, he “fell unconscious” and officers immediately removed his handcuffs at the direction of EMS personnel.
EMS began CPR on the unconscious man, transporting him to Beth Israel Hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The NYPD Force Investigation Division has opened an investigation into the incident and the Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.
The name of the deceased has been withheld pending family notification.
