Fire Scorches Building Next Door To Sunset Park Daycare Center
A two-alarm fire sent 25 units and 106 firefighters to battle pesky flames at a one-story commercial building last night, an FDNY spokesperson said.
The call came in at approximately 8:26pm on Wednesday, January 4 for a blaze at 625 39th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues in Sunset Park.
According to a spokesperson, the fire was extinguished at approximately 9:40pm. No injuries resulted due to the incident.
The commercial building is just next door to the Executive Office of Challenge Early Intervention Center (649 39th Street), which houses a daycare as well as other children’s programs. Shoshana Tanenbaum of Challenge told BKLYNER that no one was in the building at the time. Children’s classes were not affected.
An employee for Tony’s Iron Works — a business in the commercial building — said the owner was unavailable to answer questions.
The FDNY spokesperson said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, as the incident is still under investigation.
