Festivals, Puppies & Star Wars Mania This Weekend In Ditmas Park

The weekend is finally here, and we’d like to help you have a great one blocks from your home. Whether you’re looking to Jam at the Junction, adopt an adorable puppy, or dress up like Darth Vader  — this is your spot for the hottest weekend events in (and around) Ditmas Park. Morgan Heritage / British Dependency
When: Friday, August 5 at 7:30pm, Gates open at 6:30pm.
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park (Enter at 9th Street and Prospect Park West).
What: The Royal Family of Reggae Morgan Heritage comes home to Brooklyn home with explosive Anguilla-based trio British Dependency.
How much: Free. Rain or shine.

80s Hip Hop at Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco
When: Friday, August 5 from 7:30pm to 10pm.
Where: Lefrak Center at Lakeside, Prospect Park.
What: Roll-bounce and groove to your favorite 80s hip hop songs, featuring throwbacks from when it all began. (This event is 21+)
How Much: $18 per person.

Pop-Up Audubon Fishing Clinic and more free events at the park
When: Saturday and Sunday, August 6 and 7, sessions start at 1pm and 3pm.
Where: Prospect Park, multiple locations. Fishing is on the peninsula near the lake.
What: Learn all the fishing basics: aquatic ecology, fishing safety, how to use a cane pole and collect your own bait. Also check out the tons of other outdoor events at the park this weekend including nature exploration (Saturday, 10am to 1pm); Free rowing on the lake (Saturday 12pm to 4pm); and Woodland Corps (Saturday 10am to 2pm).

Adoptapalooza
When: Saturday, August 6, 12pm-5pm.
Where: Prospect Park West and 15th Street (Bartel-Pritchard Square).
What: The Alliance for NYC’s Animals is holding a mega pet-adoption event where over 150 dogs and cats from more than a dozen rescue organizations will be available to fall in love with. Bring the whole family for an afternoon of frolicking and fun with happy animals looking for a happy home. See our preview article here.

JamFest 2016 at The Junction
When: Saturday, August 6 from 3pm to 8pm.
Where: Brooklyn College, 2900 Bedford Avenue in Boylan Hall Room 1407.
What: Join the Flatbush Nostrand Junction BID for the best music, art, culture, crafts and food that Flatbush has to offer. With performances by DJ Hard Hittin’ Harry, Orisha Love, Earthman Experience Band, and Art of Legohn Dance Troupe, its sure to be a lively day.
How Much: Free

BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival: The Hubble Cantata / Tigue
When: Saturday, August 6 at 7:30pm, Gates open at 6:30pm.
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park (Enter at 9th Street and Prospect Park West).
What: Composer Paola Prestini and collaborators transport us through the cosmos with a powerful combination of music, science, and virtual reality.
How much: Free, rain or shine.

Live Music at Bar Chord
When: Saturday, August 6 at 10pm
Where: Bar Chord, 1003 Cortelyou Road between Coney Island Avenue and Stratford Road.
What: Come see the classic blues guitar stylings of Solomon Hicks, one of the genre’s rising stars.
How Much: Free show, but don’t forget the drinks at the bar.

International Day of Friendship festival in Downtown Brooklyn
When: Sunday, August 7 from 1pm to 5pm.
Where: Parade starts at Fulton Street & Flatbush Avenue and continues toward Brooklyn Heights. Performances  and food at Brooklyn Borough Hall & Columbus Park through 5pm.
What: This event sounds like it will be worth the trip uptown — Join Brooklyn Boro President Eric Adams at the third annual International Day of Friendship celebration, recognizing hundreds of cultures and ethnicities that make Brooklyn the center of diversity. The Unity Parade of Flags features flags of 195 nations; performances from New Yorkers who represent more than 80 countries plus dancers, drummers, stilt walkers, and a taste of international cuisine.

Smorgasburg at Prospect Park
When: Sundays, 11am-6pm.
Where: Prospect Park, Breeze Hill (Located near Lakeside and the Lincoln Road entrance).
What: Hungry after an afternoon of fishing? Stroll over to Smorgasburg to find 100 vendors and food from all over the world every Sunday at Breeze Hill, located near Lakeside and the park’s Lincoln Road entrance.  Find the market on Google Maps here. Presented in partnership with Prospect Park Alliance. Dog friendly.

Star Wars Marathon at the Kings Theater
When: Sunday August 7. Doors open at 1pm, show times: A New Hope at 2pm; The Empire Strikes Back at 4:25pm; The Return of the Jedi at 6:45pm.
Where: Kings Theater, 1027 Flatbush Avenue between Tilden & Duryea Streets.
What: Presented by the Alamo Drafthouse, this presentation of the 20th anniversary versions of the three beloved Star Wars films is sure to be a great day of fandom for all! Audiences are encouraged to dress up and get into character. Read our exclusive interviews and previews here!
