FEMA on the Search for Youth Leaders

Many Kensington youth, in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy,  volunteered their time, baked food, and sorted donated goods. FEMA wants to recognize these teens.

Nominate the teen you know who made a difference after Sandy–or any other emergency for that matter– for the Youth Preparedness Council.

April 19th is the deadline to apply, or nominate a teen. Application requirements can be found online.

Adults can nominate a teenager they consider particularly valuable in time of crisis. A teenager can apply on their own filling out an online application and getting a letter of recommendation.

FEMA believes youth involvement in emergency preparedness is vital. FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate said via a quote on the website,

Youth have a unique ability to influence their peers and families to be more resilient, and children play an important role in disaster preparedness, during and after a crisis.

In the past two years we’ve been hit with two hurricanes and and earthquake. We need our youth to help collect food and clothing and to take leadership responsibilities as they become adults. In our own way, we want to support our fantastic youth.

We’d love to hear stories–big and small–of young people going above and beyond the call of duty. Please share them in the comments.
