FDNY Responds To Suspicious Powder Reported At MS 839
The FDNY’s Hazmat team responded to a call about a suspicious powder at MS 839 at 713 Caton Avenue around 7:30pm on Thursday night, according to a Fire Department official.
The school was open for parent-teacher conferences and a parent brought some of his personal mail from home to open and read while waiting, police sources told CBS News. As he opened the mail, a white powder spilled from one of the envelopes.
Some people in the immediate area were quarantined, and the rest of the building was evacuated, the outlet reports.
Fire Department officials said that three people were transported to Kings County Hospital, but that no one showed symptoms of illness.
There was no indication the substance was hazardous, but the FDNY said it would be testing the powder to make sure, which could take some time.
