- What All-Star was named MVP in the Red Sox’s epic 2004 ALCS win?
- After breaking in with the Red Sox, pitcher Carl Mays became part of the Yankees’ first World Series-winning team in what decade?
The Bambino’s curse has long since lifted, but this season nationwide trivia masters GEEKS WHO DRINK are fanning the flames of the historic Yankees-Red Sox rivalry, all to support two fantastic nonprofits.
On Tuesday, Sept. 29, the pub-quiz company--which has moved during the pandemic from more than 1,100 bars across America to wholly online events--is hosting its first ever “VS.” quiz. In this new format, teams of trivia lovers from two sports fandoms will face off not just for trivia bragging rights, but to see who can donate the most money to charities in their teams’ respective markets.
In a both-sides quiz that’s all about the rivalry, the fan base that gives the most will be rewarded with an entire round on just their team.
“We’re working on some stuff that’s gonna be pretty painful to fans of the losing team,” said Christopher Short, chief editor of Geeks Who Drink and a six-time Jeopardy! champion. “You might call it evil, if it weren’t for such good causes.”
Indeed, the beneficiaries are two nonprofits that should be close to fans’ hearts. On the Yankees’ side, donations will benefit The Bronx Community Foundation, whose Community Relief Effort has so far marshaled a $10 million rapid response fund for a community hit especially hard by Covid-19.
"The Bronx Community Foundation is grateful for the opportunity to receive support from all of the virtual quiz participants and supporters for our COVID-19 relief program," said foundation co-founder Derrick H. Lewis.
Boston fans, meanwhile, will be donating to none other than the Red Sox Foundation, whose mission is to make a difference in the lives of children, families, veterans, and communities in need by improving their health, education, and recreational opportunities.
Tickets to the one-hour virtual pub quiz are $5.99 per device; teams of up to six devices are allowed. Half of ticket proceeds will go to the charities, and players can make and designate their additional donations at checkout. For more information, visit GeeksWhoDrink.com.
