Equality For Flatbush To Hold Fundraiser At Bar Chord On Sunday, March 22
Equality for Flatbush, a grassroots group that advocates for affordable housing in our area, among other issues, is turning to neighbors for help to raise money and awareness for its new campaign that aims to connect residents who have lived in our area for less than five years as part of an effort to educate individuals about the impact of gentrification.
The New Resident Community Project, which was just launched by Equality for Flatbush, will hold its first-ever event on Sunday, March 22 at Bar Chord (1008 Cortelyou Road). Kicking off at 2pm, the afternoon will include a fundraiser for the new group, music from the band Karikatura, drinks, and more.
The group said on its website for the event:
The New Resident Community Group, one of E4F’s newest projects, consists of both people of color and white folks who have lived in Flatbush for under five years. The intent of the initiative is to bring new residents together in solidarity with longtime ones against the skyrocketing rents and property grabs that are transforming Brooklyn building by building, block by block.
We, as new residents , feel that it is our obligation to unite and fight for the solution with long-time Brooklynites in standing up to profit-driven corporate interests and against displacement. Instead of allowing ourselves to be overcome by helplessness and guilt, we pour that energy into the struggles against repressive policing and in support of affordable housing, and challenge our fellow new residents to do the same.
