El Paso Is Open On Newkirk Avenue For All Your Burrito & Taco Needs
El Paso Mexican Grill is now open at 1610 Newkirk Avenue (between East 16th and East 17th Streets), and it may be just the place for people craving tasty, inexpensive burritos. Taking over the spot most recently occupied by Adelynn’s Restaurant & Grill, El Paso has a small menu — sticking to a few items like burritos, tacos, and burrito bowls — and it seems like it could be a nice addition to our local delivery options.
We say delivery because the space inside for seating is pretty limited, with a handful of stools lining the front window and side wall. Half the space is dedicated to the assembly counter, where the friendly staff will stuff a burrito to its breaking point with an array of items that you’ll probably be familiar with if you’ve ever been to a Chipotle. A nice bonus here is that they’re open for breakfast, so you can get breakfast tacos and burritos, as we did this morning.
First off, if we’re going to compare the set-up to Chipotle, we should note that El Paso’s burritos are a bit smaller than the ones you’ll find at that big national chain, though they’re similar to the size you’ll find at other local spots like El Acuario, Cinco de Mayo, and Don Burrito (all of which, we think, are plenty big enough). And price-wise, at $5.99 for a breakfast burrito and $6.99 for one for lunch or dinner, they’re comparable to nearby Don Burrito ($6.95-$7.95), and a little less expensive than El Acuario ($9.95-$10.95) and Cinco ($7-$8).
The breakfast burrito comes with scrambled eggs, roasted potatoes, beans, cheese, sour cream, salsa, and a choice of either chorizo, grilled chicken, grilled steak, or veggies (onions, peppers, and guacamole). We went with the chorizo, which while tasty, made for a pretty messy burrito, as can be expected from the oily sausage, so make sure you grab some extra napkins if that’s what you order.
The three salsas you can choose from are a mild green tomatillo one, a medium red chile one, and the house “fire” sauce, which was certainly pretty spicy, but if you’re someone who can handle a lot of heat, you may want to ask for extra. Overall, it’s a really filling breakfast, which is only available from 8am to 11am daily.
The rest of the menu, which you can check out at Seamless, includes things like tacos (breakfast 3/$5.99, lunch/dinner 3 /$6.49), burrito bowls (breakfast $5.99, lunch/dinner $6.99), quesadillas ($6.99), nachos ($6.99), salad ($6.49), and soup ($3.99).
We’re looking forward to tasting more from the menu at El Paso — have any of you tried it yet, and if so, what did you think? We know at least one neighbor’s opinion:
