East 4th Street Community Garden Flea Market April 26 & 27

The East 4th Street Community Garden, located between Caton Avenue and Fort Hamilton Parkway, is kicking off the growing season with its biannual flea market on Saturday, April 26 from 9am to 2pm, and Sunday, April 27 from 10am to 3pm.

Held on the E 4th Street sidewalk in front of the garden, it’s a fundraiser whose success underwrites the purchase of art supplies for children’s workshops, bushes, flowers, soil, tools, lumber, garden furniture, and other materials necessary for the garden to offer a quiet local haven throughout the year.

In addition to the gently used merchandise including clothes, books, CDs, knick-knacks, and odds and ends, kids aged 2-7 accompanied by an adult will learn how to whip up an “edible dirt cake” at the on Saturday morning from 10am to noon. The market will also have a selection of flowering plants for sale and a $1 bargain table.

Other upcoming events at the garden include a free concert by local professional musicians scheduled for Saturday, May 5 from 2-4pm and another children’s event on Saturday, June 14. No reservations are necessary for the concert; just bring a chair or blanket. Check the East 4th Street Garden

Today’s East 4th Street Garden, the descendant of the Windsor Terrace Kensington Veterans Memorial Garden created in 1979, still marches to the founders’ tune. Two plaques at the base of the garden’s flagpole honor six neighborhood veterans killed in action in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Two privates, Charles Corrigan, a WWII veteran; and Daniel Kiernan, a Korea vet, have given their names to local VFW post #8160.

On Sunday, May 25 at 1pm the six veterans will be recognized for their service as part of a rededication ceremony the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Church Girl Scout troop is holding to retire the current flag and raise a new one on the flagpole. Veterans from the Corrigan Kiernan VFW post will be invited to attend. The public is welcome too.

The East 4th Street Community Garden is open to the public April through October on Wednesdays from 4-6pm; Saturdays, 9am-1pm; Sundays 10am-2pm; and whenever the gate is open.
