KENSINGTON – Police have arrested and charged Jasmin Morales-Cruz, 24, of Coney Island Avenue, with vehicular manslaughter, DWI and driving without a license, in the death of Evvon Alexander, 28, of Foster Avenue.

On Monday, May 27, 2019, just before 4:00 AM hours, police responded to a 911 call of a car crash involving a motorcycle at the corner of Ocean Parkway and Beverly Road.

Upon arrival, they found Alexander unconscious and unresponsive with trauma to his body, having been thrown off his motorcycle in the crash. He was pronounced dead at Maimonides Hospital. Three passengers and the driver were transported to Maimonides Hospital in stable condition.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Alexander was riding a Kawasaki motorcycle southbound on Ocean Parkway and was attempting to make a left turn onto Beverly Road when he was struck by an Infinity Q50 sedan driven by Morales-Cruz heading northbound on Ocean Parkway. Last time there was a fatality at this intersection was on June 7, 2011, when a 51-year-old man was killed in a crash.

According to the data on Vision Zero website, this intersection has had one death since 2009, and no crashes whatsoever with injuries since 2016, which is unlikely to be accurate, as the data lists 2016 as having 12 crashes with injuries, 2015 – 26,  2014 – 8, 2013 – 12, 2012 – 6, 2011 – 7, 2010 – 30.   This particular intersection is the first left that can be made by cars coming off of Prospect Expressway and is a very heavy left turn. NYC Open Data seems to list at least 10 crashes with at least 3 injuries for just 2019 so far.

The investigation remains ongoing by the Highway District Collision Investigation Squad in the crash. We are still waiting to hear back from the DOT on the accuracy of data in the Vision Zero reports and a detailed breakdown for the accidents at that intersection. Will update when we do.
