Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz wants to make sure that used car you’ve got your eye on wasn’t one of the 400,000 abandoned autos swept up in Superstorm Sandy. According to a press release, Cymbrowitz is urging consumers to check with a special DMV website to make sure the car they are buying isn’t a damaged Sandy “floater.”

The special website can found by visiting the DMV’s website. There you will be able to enter the vehicle identification number (VIN) to check if the car was declared a “salvage” vehicle.

Cymbrowitz lamented the dirty business of trading in busted cars but is hopeful that this DMV service will go a long way in weeding out the bad cars and dealers.

“It is unfortunate that there are people out there trying to capitalize on the devastation caused by Sandy, but it is fortunate that we have a mechanism to protect ourselves against these unscrupulous actions,” Cymbrowitz said in the release.
