After a long Labor Day weekend, it’s finally time to drudge up those schoolbooks and backpacks for back to school week. But there’s still a host of great local activities while the summer weather lingers, whether you’re looking to see jazz standards or spoken word poetry — this is your spot for the hottest weekday events in (and immediately around) Ditmas Park. Free Creative Writing for Adults
When: Tuesday, September 6 at 6:15pm.
Where: Cortelyou Public Library, 1305 Cortelyou Road at Argyle Road
What: Looking to hone your creative writing skills in a supportive environment? Or share your writing with a group of other writers? Join the New York Writers Coalition for this weekly class at the Cortelyou Library, and find that writers community you’ve been looking for. (No prior experience necessary — that does sound supportive)

Torn Out Theater presents The Tempest by William Shakespeare
When: September 7, 8, 9, and 10 at 5:30pm
Where: The Music Pagoda in Prospect Park
What: The all-female cast of Torn Out Theater‘s piece brought a tremendous amount of attention last Spring as the production is performed mostly in the nude. The company wants the ideas of body positivity and normalizing the nude female form to synchronize with the themes of identity and liberation inherent within the play. Jazz Standards at Bar Chord
When: Wednesday, September 7 at 9pm.
Where: Bar Chord, 1003 Cortelyou Road between Coney Island Avenue and Stratford Road.
What: Looking for a relaxing evening of live jazz standards? Check out this jazz series curated by Nicolas Let,am-Burtinovic.
How Much: Free show, but don’t forget the drinks at the bar.

Live folk music at Le Paddock in Windsor Terrace
When: Wednesday, September 7 at 8pm.
Where: Le Paddock Bistro, 1235 Prospect Avenue between Vanderbilt Street and Reeve Place.
What: Brooklyn folk group Morgy and Mess returns to Le Paddock Bistro for an evening of live music to enliven your Wednesday night.
How Much: Enjoy live music over some dinner.

Annual Back-to-School Apple Giveaway from Flatbush Food Co-op
When: Thursday, September 8 from  7:45am to 8:45am.
Where: PS 139, 330 Rugby Road between Beverley and Cortelyou Roads.
What: Flatbush Food Co-op’s annual apple giveaway is back, welcoming all neighborhood kids back to school for a healthy and happy year.
How Much: Free

Clean Up Prospect Park with the Volunteer Corp
When: Thursday, September 8 from 10am to 2pm.
Where: Prospect Park, various locations.
What: Looking to give back this Thursday? Join the Thursday Corps volunteers to spruce up various projects throughout Prospect Park. The corps meets at a different location every week helping in a variety of landscape and horticultural projects. Register online or call (718) 287-3400 for more information.

Live scored spoken-word at The Owl Music Parlor
When: Thursday, September 8 at 8pm (doors at 7:30pm).
Where: The Owl Music Parlour, 497 Rogers Avenue between Midwood and Maple Streets.
What: GAVAGAI is a monthly performance series curated and hosted by poet Danielle Blau, with readings scored with original live music by composer-improvisers David Cieri, Mike Brown and more surprises.
How Much: $10 suggested donation.
