The Day: Wintery Weather, Holiday Fairs and Christmas Hymns

Mother Nature is finally starting to bring winter to the city. Look out for those white flakes around the nabe this weekend. (Photo by Oswald Cabrera)

Good morning, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.

Prepare for a wintery, snowy weekend, locals. The snow should start flying tonight and continue into Saturday, whiting out your weekend, according to the National Weather Service – you might even see up to 4 inches of snow in the nabe on Saturday. Stay inside with some hot cocoa and wrap those holiday presents. But if you go outside, bundle up and send us your pictures by emailing them or posting them to

  • If you do venture out into the snow this Saturday, check out the annual Dillon Center Holiday Fair at St. Joseph’s College. The fair, which is free and open to the public, includes various festive activities for kids of all ages. Kids can take pictures with Santa, make their own snow globes and shop for hand-crafted gifts for mom and dad. There’s a raffle for the adults, live entertainment and food also available. The event will be held in the Clinton Avenue Auditorium, 245 Clinton Avenue between DeKalb and Willloughby Avenues, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
  • And if you want to continue the party into the night, stop by BRIC’s House Party, which takes place Saturday from 1 until 11 p.m. Events are free until 8 p.m., which include art, performance, media and education activities. The night swirls into a dance party at 8 p.m., and for $10 you can move to grooves by DJ Rekha and Afro-funk-hop group mamarzzi. All festivities will be held in the BRIC Arts Media House  at 647 Fulton Street.
  • The String Orchestra of Brooklyn is performing at the Lafayette Presbyterian Church for the first time on Saturday for its Christmas celebrations. The SOB will be joined by the Brooklyn Art Song Society  to present Stabat Mater Dolorosa, including the music of Pergolesi and Cooper, for stunning nativity hymns for solo voices and the string orchestra. Tickets at $15 for general admission and $10 for students and seniors. The event starts at 8 p.m. at 85 South Oxford Street.
