The Day: A Winter Storm, Brooklyn Spirit at Mayoral Inauguration and a Wynton Marsalis Concert

After the sun peeked out, many locals got out to start shoveling out of the blizzard. (Photo by Oswaldo Cabrera)

Good morning, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.

Five inches of snow have already fallen overnight, and more snow is expected this morning, The National Weather Service reported. If you’re sitting at home, it may look like a winter wonderland out there, but if you traveled this morning, you might consider the blizzard more of a headache. Hundreds of flights have been cancelled, and the New York State Thruway and Long Island Expressway were closed overnight, The New York Daily News reported. But your kids may be in luck: On his third day as mayor, Bill de Blasio decided to close city schools because of the storm.

How are you spending the day, locals? Whether you’re trudging to work, relaxing at home and watching the snowfall from indoors, shoveling up the mess or going sledding in Fort Greene Park, we want to see your photos. Feel free to add them to our Flickr group.

  • The Brooklyn spirit was in the air at the mayoral inauguration ceremony on Wednesday: Mayor Bill de Blasio hails from Park Slope, and – of course – Public Advocate Letitia James lives in Clinton Hill, which she represented on the City Council for the past 10 years, Brooklyn Heights Blog reported.  At the inauguration, James was accompanied by Dasani, the heroine of the recent New York Times series about a family’s struggles at the dilapidated Auburn Family Reception Center. James’ sharply criticized Bloomberg’s administration in her speech, and urged the new administration to be one “that cares more about a child going hungry than a new stadium or a new tax credit for a luxury development.”
  • Jazz musician Wynton Marsalis will be live in concert on Jan. 10 at Jazz 966, held at the Grace Agard Harewood Senior Center – 966 Fulton Street between Grand Avenue and Saint James Place. There will be two shows: One at 8 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) and another at 10:30 p.m. (doors open at 9:45 p.m.). Advance admission costs $40 for one show or $70 for both; tickets at the door cost $60 for one show or $90 for both; and limited front row reserved seating costs $60 for one show or $100 for both. For tickets and vendor information, you can call Michelle Collins at (917) 593-9776 weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Advance tickets can also be purchased at the senior center every Friday night leading up to the event, or online at www.fortgreenecouncil.org.
  • Adrian Grenier, who stars in NBC’s “Entourage,” was spotted checking out a commercial garage at 28 Putnam Avenue near Downing Street, which is asking for $2.29 million, The Real Deal reported. The asking price has significantly jumped since last October, when the property was going for $1.85 million, according to the site. The home would be a perfect abode for foodies or artists, its listing broker, Kathleen Perkins of Douglas Elliman, told The New York Post. “The garage could become a restaurant, or an artist’s or recording studio,” she told the paper. “This could be our biggest corner property in all of Clinton Hill.”
