The Day: A Winter Storm and an Amended Proposal for LICH

Be careful outside today: The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning until 6 p.m. tonight. With highs of 35 degrees, winds of up to 13 miles per hour, and freezing rain and sleet, we’re looking at a lot of new ice on the ground. Lace up those boots and watch your step, locals.

Here’s some news to start off your morning:

• The Brooklyn Hospital Center has submitted a new proposal for the redevelopment of Long Island College Hospital and has been joined by Related Companies and Blue Wolf Capital Fund III, LP in its bid on the site, according to Crain’s New York Business. The amended proposal would add five new healthcare centers to the neighborhood and includes a detailed plan for keeping the jobs of LICH employees.
• Do you have a favorite book that you’ve read so many times that it’s like a friend? Author Rebecca Mead does. Her relationship with George Eliot’s novel “Middlemarch” is the subject of her new book, “My Life in Middlemarch” and she’ll be at Greenlight Bookstore at 686 Fulton Street tonight at 7:30 p.m. to talk about it. She will be joined by fellow author Adelle Waldman.
• The Super Bowl wasn’t the only sports highlight this week: Two students at St. Joseph’s College have received Player of the Week honors. Both the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the Association of Division III Independents recognized junior David Louison for leading the men’s basketball team in scoring. After leading the men’s volleyball team to its first victory against Cooper Union in its first game of the season, junior Raul Urshela was also named Player of the Week by the HVIAC.
