- The Tillary Street Women’s Shelter is plagued by violent outbursts among residents, DNAinfo reported. The shelter provides services for women with mental illnesses, but has struggled with a rash of fights between residents since late December. Since then, police have been called to the shelter at least nine times to quell violent disputes. According to a spokeswoman from the New York City Department of Homeless Services, police calls to mental health shelters are common, due to the challenges of servicing the special needs of the residents.
- Two years after the Barclays Center opened to the public, a plan for community use of the arena is finally taking form, according to Brooklyn Bureau. As part of the Atlantic Yards Community Benefits Agreement, the arena will be rented out to eligible community organizations for at least ten events a year starting this September. Eligible groups include nonprofit organizations, public and charter schools, religious groups, hospitals and block associations. Groups that wish to participate in the program have until June 15 to apply to the Downtown Brooklyn Neighborhood Alliance. More information and rental applications can be found here.
