The Day: Valentine’s Day, Local Rivalries and Block Grants

After yesterday’s snowfall, hopefully you’ve dug yourself out in time for Valentine’s Day. Today will be sunny and mild, with a high near 40, according to the National Weather Service – perfect for taking your date somewhere special. - After you’ve got your fill of chocolate-covered strawberries and fancy dinners, head to the Barclays Center on Sunday for the Battle of Brooklyn between Long Island University Brooklyn and St. Francis College. The annual men’s basketball game between the Terriers and the Blackbirds began in the 1975-76 season, and the team’s have fought on the court every year since in honor of the first major battle of the American Revolutionary War. Complimentary tickets are available to local youth groups and schoolchildren. Tickets for the general community can be purchased online. The game tips off at 4 p.m.
- Have an idea to help spruce up your block in the nabe? Apply for the Love Your Block grant. Love Your Block is a partnership between Citizens Committee for New York City and NYC Service that lets New Yorkers transform their neighborhoods. Resident-led volunteer groups can get a grant up to $1,000 and access to many city services. The deadline is quickly approaching – apply by February 20 to be considered for a grant.
