The Day: Slow Zones, Crime Drama and a One-Woman Show at BAM

Yesterday’s weather was bone-chilling, but today brings warmer temperatures to the nabe. It’ll hit the mid-40s today, according to the National Weather Service, and will continue to rise throughout the weekend – Saturday will even hit the mid-50s. Get outside as much as you can, locals. • On Saturday, the Department of Transportation will hold a “slow zone raising” event at the corner of Clermont and DeKalb Avenues to demonstrate how lower speed limits improves the safety of the community. Starting at 12:30 p.m., DOT will reduce the speed limit in that area from 30 to 20 mph. By reducing the speed, DOT hopes the community will see the benefits of changing driver behavior.
• “Dead End,” Sidney Kingsley’s 1930s crime drama, opens tonight at the Irondale Ensemble Project. The show follows the Dead End Kids, a “petty gang of street urchins” who are on the path to a life of crime. It’s a revival, and the Inrondale Ensemble is teaming up with the Young Company for the first time to bring the play to the stage. It opens at 7:30 p.m., and general admission tickets are $25. Irondale Center is located at 85 South Oxford Street, between Fulton and Lafayette.
• If drama isn’t your thing, head over to the Brooklyn Academy of Music tonight for a one-time only performance of “Paige in Full.” It’s a one-woman show that involves hip-hop, spoken word, dance and a humorous yet honest personal story. Paige Hernandez wrote the show with her brother and tackles the issue of growing up as a mulitcultural girl in Baltimore. The show starts at 7:30 p.m., and general admission tickets are $12.
