The Day: LIU Plays Lamar, Experimental Ragas and Free Jokes

Make sure to take in some sun today, neighbors. Although it’s looking a bit windy, with speeds of 14 to 18 miles per hour according to the National Weather Service, temperatures should reach about 30 degrees with few clouds in sight. After this, it’s back to the white stuff, with a 30 percent chance of snow after 3 a.m.

  • Feathers will fly when the Long Island University Brooklyn Blackbirds play the Lamar University Cardinals this Wednesday. The men’s basketball team will take on the Texans at 7 p.m. in the Steinberg Wellness Center at 1 University Plaza on the corner of DeKalb Avenue and Ashland Place.   • Can you sing with your body, with gestures as well as words? Vocalist and composer Samita Sinha attempts to see whether it’s possible in her new work, “Cipher.” Come experience this work in progress at the BRIC House Artist Studio this Wednesday as Sinha blends multiple languages, jazz, blues, folk and Hindustani ragas into a full-body composition. This special preview is performed as part of BRIC Arts Media’s BRIClab Residency program, which commissions emerging and established local artists to experiment with their work. In addition to “Cipher,” which will officially premier next fall, the experimental sound artist Bonnie Jones will lead a conversation about the interplay between visceral and conceptual elements of performance art. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased here. The performance is at 7:30 p.m in the BRIC House Artist Studio at 647 Fulton Street.
  • Looking for a laugh this Thursday? The Brooklyn Academy of Music teams with IFC to present “Get It Out There,” a free comedy showcase for emerging comics to experiment with new work. This week’s lineup is hosted by Sean Patton and features former Daily Show Correspondent Wyatt Cenac, Selena Coppock, Nimesh Patel, and Ali Wong. The show starts at 9 p.m. in the BAMCafé in the Peter Jay Sharp Building at 30 Lafayette Avenue, but the bar will open at 8 p.m.
