Crime Report: Women’s Shelter Assaults, Stolen Cars and Unauthorized Account Usage

Two men – Andres Nario and Orlando Bailon-Olmedo – were having a fight on July 13 at 11:30 a.m. when Bailon-Olmedo allegedly punched Nario in the face, kicked him and snatched his chain necklace. Nario also allegedly sliced both of Bailon-Olmedo’s wrists with a razor blade or knife.

Bailon-Olmedo, 38 was charged with robbery in the second and third degrees, grand larceny in the fourth degree, assault in the third degree, petit larceny, criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree, attempted assault in the third degree, menacing in the third degree and harassment in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office. Nario was charged with assault in the second degree, menacing in the second degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, attempted assault in the third degree, menacing in the third degree and harassment in the second degree, the DA’s office reported.

Including the crime above, 29 felonies and eight arrests were reported in the 88th Precinct last week, up from 17 felonies and six arrests the previous week. Assaults at the Tillary Street Women’s Shelter, a trend in the precinct, continued during the week. Four cars were reported stolen from neighborhood streets, and three incidents were reported of property stolen from cars and trucks. Many locals also reported that bank and cell phone accounts were fraudulently created or used in their name. And two Brooklyn Hospital Center employees were victims of thefts – both on July 16.

Bullet Grazing

A 25-year-old man was grazed by two bullets – one on his head and one on his groin – along Monument Walk on the grounds of the Ingersoll Houses on July 16 around 4:30 p.m., police said. He was taken to Kings County Hospital Center for treatment.

Women’s Shelter Assaults

-Sharieta Simpson, 32, was arrested after she allegedly pushed and kicked a 66-year-old fellow Tillary Street Women’s Shelter resident on June 12 at 4 p.m., police said. The victim, who fell on her left shoulder, was caught in the middle of Simpson’s fight with another person, according to police.

Simpson was charged with assault in the second and third degrees, stalking in the third degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, attempted assault in the third degree and harassment in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.

-Cassandra Watson, a 29-year-old Tillary Street Women’s Shelter resident, was arrested after she allegedly hit another resident on the left side of the head with a combination lock on July 15 at about 8:15 p.m., police said. The victim, 33, told police that prior to the attack, Watson had been sneaking into her bed at night and kissing her. She had previously told Watson that she wanted nothing to do with her, police said.

Watson was charged with assault in the second and third degrees, stalking in the third degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, attempted assault in the third degree, menacing in the third degree, stalking in the fourth degree and harassment in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.

-A 27-year-old Tillary Street Women’s Shelter resident told police that a fellow resident hit her in the arm with a cane on July 17 around 10:30 p.m. No arrest was made, according to police.

Thefts from Hospital Employees

-A Brooklyn Hospital Center employee told police that someone stole her Chanel wallet and used her Chase Bank credit card to make unauthorized purchases totaling $1,000. She told police that she last used her wallet when she purchased coffee at work on July 16 at 10:30 a.m. Chase bank called her two days later to inform her of the fraudulent charges.

-A 39-year-old Brooklyn Hospital Center employee told police that she placed her pocketbook under her desk in her office on July 16 at 11:45 a.m. and went outside. When she returned 15 minutes later, she realized the pocketbook – containing $50 in cash, a Chase Visa debit card, a non-driver identification card, house keys and a BJ’s card – was gone. She told police that the doors to her office were left open, giving patients access to walk through. The woman cancelled her debit card.

Elevator Mugging

Two men allegedly punched a man and ripped $200 from his pants pocket in a Walt Whitman Houses elevator on July 19 just past midnight. The victim received medical attention, police said. He told police that he would not be able to recognize his attackers.

Phone Theft

Jemel A. Donato allegedly snatched a 37-year-old woman’s iPhone and two pairs of sunglasses and threw them on the ground, damaging them during an argument on July 19 at about 6 p.m. inside a Saint James Place apartment.

Donato, 39, was charged with criminal mischief in the fourth degree and petit larceny, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.

Business Burglary

A burglar smashed his way into Ultimate Bay Diagnostics Inc. on Atlantic Avenue through the concrete wall of an adjoining building and made off with $9,000 in cash and a computer scanner on July 16, police reported.

Cops said thief removed the locks from the adjoining building’s roll-up gate after business hours and slipped in through the front door, then broke through a wall to loot the office.

Overnight Guest Trouble

A woman told police that she believes a man who she picked up and brought home on July 15 at 2 a.m. stole her MacBook Pro from her Greene Avenue apartment. After the man left, she said, she took a nap and went out. When she returned at 10 p.m., she realized the laptop was gone.

Car Thefts

-Four teens were arrested after they allegedly stole a 2010 Volvo from its parking space on Clermont Avenue between Willoughby and DeKalb Avenues. The owner told police she parked her car on July 16 at 11:30 a.m., and when she returned the next day at 7:05 a.m., it was gone.

Kevalar Gorman, 19, and Shahkir Emanuel, 18, were charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle in the third degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office. A DA’s office spokesman could not provide charge information for Emil Pressley, 18, and Janile Whitted, 19.

-A 29-year-old man told police that he parked his Honda Accord on Lafayette Avenue between Vanderbilt and Clinton Avenues with keys in the ignition on July 17 at 10:25 a.m. When he returned five minutes later, he saw a man driving his car east on Lafayette Avenue.

-A 53-year-old man told police that he parked his 2004 BMW on Cumberland Street at Atlantic Avenue on July 18 at 11 p.m. and locked the doors. When he returned the next day at 11:20 a.m., it was gone. Officers did not see any broken glass at the scene. Cops searched the area, but could not find the car. The car was not towed by the City Marshall or Sheriff’s Department, and it was not taken to the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s tow pound, police said.

-A 36-year-old man told police that he parked his 2002 Acura on South Oxford Street at Lafayette Avenue on July 17 at 6:30 p.m. When he returned on July 20 at 2:30 p.m., his car was gone. An officer found broken glass at the parking space.

Thefts from Cars and Trucks

-On July 13 at about noon, someone removed the driver’s side lock from a truck parked on Hall Street between Park and Myrtle Avenues and took cell phones and a Blackberry from inside, police said.

-On July 17 at about 12:20 a.m., someone broke the rear passenger-side window of a 30-year-old man’s car parked on Clermont Avenue at Park Avenue and took an HP laptop, Samsung charger and a Nikon camera and lens from inside, police said.

-A 32-year-old man told police that someone stole a Canon camera, two Sandisk memory cards, a bag and a typewriter from his truck parked on Myrtle Avenue between Adelphi Street and Clermont Avenue between 4 and 7 p.m. on July 6. He said the theft probably happened either when he was talking to a meter maid, or when he left his truck unattended to go inside a building on the street. He told police that the truck’s window was open.

Stolen Bicycle

A 24-year-old man told police that he leaned his bicycle on the banister in the hallway of his Saint James Place apartment on July 20 at 11 p.m. When he returned the following morning at 8 a.m., it was gone.

Wallet Thefts

-A 37-year-old woman told police that someone took her wallet from her purse while she was eating lunch at Habana Outpost on Fulton Street between South Portland Avenue and South Oxford Street on July 20 between 5:30 and 5:45 p.m. She told police that she had hung her bag on a hook next to her. The wallet contained $95 in cash, Capitol One, CitiBank, Macy’s and Williams-Sonoma credit cards, a driver’s license, a CitiBank checkbook and blank prescriptions. The woman told police that she cancelled her credit cards.

-A 60-year-old woman told police that she accidentally left her wallet on the counter of Hala Hala Grocery on Myrtle Avenue between Clermont and Vanderbilt Avenues on July 20 at 3:45 p.m. When she returned 10 minutes later, it was gone. The store owner has surveillance video that shows someone taking the wallet and fleeing. The wallet contained a Capitol One MasterCard, an Excella debit card, an Oxford/United health insurance card, a Mercy College employee identification card and a non-driver identification card. She told police that no transactions or unauthorized purchases were made with her cards.

Unauthorized Bank Account Activity

-A thief withdrew $11,000 from a 54-year-old Carlton Avenue resident’s personal bank account and opened a new account in her name between July 12 and 15, police said. The woman told police that Chase Bank’s fraud department had notified her of this unauthorized activity.

-A 49-year-old Saint James Place resident told police that someone made a $2,300 money transfer from a Chase Manhattan Bank account she shared with her husband. She said that when she went to the bank on July 11 to make a withdrawal, the teller told her the account was frozen due to suspicious activity. She told police that she doesn’t know what account the money transfer went to.

-Between July 2 and 8, someone fraudulently cashed four checks totaling $4,844.82 at a Visa ATM at B&H Photo in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, police said.

Fraudulent Cell Phone Accounts

-A 52-year-old Greene Avenue resident told police that someone opened three cell phone accounts in his name from May 7 to July 9. He said that he lost his wallet containing identification cards in November of 2012, and he is now receiving letters and calls from collection agencies.

-A 38-year-old Lefferts Place resident told police that she returned from a trip on July 16 at 5:30 p.m. to find that someone had used her name and address to open a Verizon cell phone account. She said that she did not give her Social Security number or any other personal information to anyone, but she lost an identification card earlier this year.

Child Abuse

Aisia Reaves, 37, was arrested after she allegedly hit her 12-year-old daughter on the arm with an extension cord, causing a visible welt. Woodhull Medical Center emergency room staff reported the incident when the girl was receiving treatment for another injury, police said. The Administration for Children’s Services was notified, according to police.

Reaves was charged with assault in the third degree, menacing in the second and third degrees, endangering the welfare of a child, attempted assault in the third degree, attempted endangering the welfare of a child and harassment in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.
