Crime Report: Violent Couples’ Quarrels and Various Thefts
A gunman demanded a 37-year-old man’s belongings and made off with an iPhone and $60 on Washington Avenue between Greene and Gates Avenues on May 22 at 10 p.m., police said. The robber then fled and the victim went into the Clinton-Washington Avenue G train station.
The victim later reported the theft at the 90th Precinct in Williamsburg. 90th Precinct officers searched the area, but could not find the thief or the man’s belongings.
Including the crime above, 17 felonies and three arrests were reported in the 88th Precinct last week, compared to 24 felonies and three arrests the previous week. Violent couples’ quarrels comprised the majority of the felonies and all of the arrests this week. Police also reported various thefts last week, ranging from home burglaries to stolen trucks to stolen laptops and iPhones. Three locals reported fraudulent activity on their credit or debit cards this week.
Attempted Armed Robbery
A man flashed a gun and demanded a woman’s cellphone as she walked on Washington Avenue toward the G train station at around 1 p.m. on May 30, then fled empty-handed when she screamed. The woman told police the man fled west on Greene Avenue. She said she was not injured during the incident. Police searched the area but could not find the man.
Street Attack
A 70-year-old woman told police that someone punched her in the face in front of her Lafayette Avenue apartment on June 1 at about 5 p.m. The woman sustained minor cuts, redness and pain. She received medical attention at the scene, according to police. Police said that the attacker was about 10 years younger than the woman, but provided no additional information.
Wallet Grab
Someone stole a 28-year-old customer’s wallet from the counter at a Subway sandwich shop on Flatbush Avenue near Fulton Street on May 28 between 11:35 a.m. and 12:10 p.m. Police were not immediately able to play back the footage from a security camera at the store. Police searched the area but could not find the wallet or the thief.
Sidewalk Swipe
A 28-year-old man told police that someone stole bags containing a MacBook, iPhone, cables and some Australian currency as he was unloading his car in front of his house on Adelphi Street between Greene Avenue and Fulton Street around noon on May 15. The man said that he had left the bags on the street and was going back and forth to bring them into his house. The items were valued at $1,885.
Stolen Truck
An Eastern Transport container truck parked on Flushing Avenue near Cumberland Street on May 10 was gone when the owner went to check on it on May 31. Security cameras at the Brooklyn Navy Yard may be able to help in the investigation, police said. There are no security cameras nearby, police said, and there were no witnesses on the street.
Home Burglaries
-Someone stole a Toshiba laptop, worth $600, from a 34-year-old woman’s Saint James Place apartment when she was away from May 24 until May 27. She told police that when she got home, she found that her front door, which she had double-locked, was single-locked. She also found her bedroom window, which has a fire escape leading to the backyard, unlocked. There is a security camera in front of the building, police said. Officers spoke with neighbors, who were unable to help.
-Burglars stole gold coins of an undetermined value from a house on Washington Avenue between Greene and Gates Avenues on May 22, police said. The 65-year-old resident told police that the burglars drilled out the locks on her front door and replaced them with their own locks before leaving. The victim told police she didn’t have insurance on the stolen coins. She reported the burglary on June 1 at 3:30 a.m. when she spotted a group of suspicious men in her front yard, who later drove off in a light-colored mini-van, which frightened her. An 88th Precinct officer said there is no clear connection between the burglary and the suspicious men spotted more than a week later.
Theft from Truck
On May 21 between 8:30 a.m. and noon, someone popped the driver’s side lock of a Verizon truck parked on Fleet Place and took a Panasonic Toughbook, worth $1,000, from inside. The Verizon employee who reported the theft does not know the serial number for the laptop, and said that the laptop does not have a tracking device, according to police.
Fraudulent Account Activity
-A 19-year-old Long Island University student told police that someone made unauthorized purchases on his Citizens Bank Visa debit card totaling $332.37, between April 19 and 20. He told police that he had lost his card at the 7-Eleven on DeKalb Avenue at Fulton Street, but waited to report it until May 27, after he received his bank statement. He was traveling with the university’s baseball team when the transactions were made, police said.
-A 39-year-old man who lives on Grand Avenue between Clifton Place and Greene Avenue told police that someone made unauthorized transactions totaling $11,021 on his Visa credit card account on May 21. He told police on May 28 that he found out about the charges when Visa’s fraud department called him. He did not give anyone permission to make purchases on his account and he still has his card. All of the fraudulent transactions were made in Brooklyn, police said.
-A 25-year-old man told police that he lost his $5 black leather wallet, containing a $3 MetroCard, Social Security card, state identification card, work identification card and debit card, on Waverly Avenue between Gates Avenue and Fulton Street. When he called to have his debit card cancelled, he learned that someone had charged $33 to the card.
Couples’ Quarrels (UPDATED 3/13/17 to remove information that woudl identify victims)
-A woman, 26, was arrested after she hit her boyfriend, 27, with a baseball bat across his right ankle, bit his cheek and left index finger and then cut his right forearm with a small knife. The victim was taken from an Atlantic Terminal Houses apartment on Carlton Avenue to the Brooklyn Hospital Center, where photos were taken in the emergency room of his injuries, cops said.
She was charged with menacing in the second and third degrees, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, attempted assault, assault in the third degree and harassment in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.
-A 44-year-old man pushed his wife, 37, onto the bed of their Clifton Place apartment and choked her, then knocked her to the floor, banging her head and bruising her right eye and right leg on May 5 at 10 a.m., police said.
The man was arrested and charged with assault in the third degree, criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation, menacing in the third degree and harassment in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.
-A man, 37, was arrested for choking his daughter’s mother and slamming her head against the wall several times at the Brooklyn Hospital Center on May 27 at 1:25 p.m. The woman, 23, told police that she sustained scratches on the right side of her neck as a result of the choking.
The man was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, attempted assault in the third degree, menacing in the third degree and harassment in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.
-A 28-year-old woman told police that her boyfriend grabbed her by the throat and whacked her over the head with an umbrella on Flushing Avenue in the Brooklyn Navy Yard on May 28 at 1 p.m., police said. The woman suffered a cut on the top of her head.
-A 31-year-old woman told police she jumped out of her ex-boyfriend’s moving car after he choked her and then pulled out of a parking space at Lafayette and Washington Avenues on June 2 around 1 a.m. The woman cut her arm and back in the leap, police said.
