Crime Report: Street Assaults, Robbery at Gunpoint and Thefts from Cars

A worker at King of Classon Avenue Deli, 504 Classon Avenue, told police on March 28 that a customer paid for a sandwich that morning. with a $1 bill, then claimed he had handed over a $20 bill and demanded the $20 back. He told police he saw a black handgun in the man’s pocket and gave him the $20. Police searched but could not find the thief.

Including the above crime, 17 felonies and four arrests were reported in the 88th Precinct between March 24 and March 28. Locals also reported thefts from cars, street assaults and robberies.

Theft at Gunpoint

A 35-year old man told police that two men robbed him at gunpoint while he was making a food delivery in the Ingersoll Houses at 11 p.m. on March 24. He said they took $308 in cash and Chinese food. Police searched but could not find the thieves.

Assault in the Walt Whitman Houses

Police arrested Patrick Gbarjuewaye, 32, on March 25 for allegedly pushing a 25-year-old woman down a flight of stairs in the Walt Whitman Houses. The woman told police he had also thrown four wine glasses and a microwave to the floor, smashing them. Gbarjuewaye is charged with criminal mischief in the fourth degree, petit larceny, criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree, menacing in the third degree and harassment in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.

Street Assaults and Robberies

-A 52-year-old woman told police on March 28 she was attacked and robbed while she walking on Waverly Avenue near Gates Avenue that morning. She told police she was walking home from the methadone clinic on Fulton Street and Waverly Avenue, when two thieves approached her from behind. One hit her in the head with a cane, knocking her to the ground, and the other went through her right jacket pocket and took $100 and her Xanax medication. She was taken to Brooklyn Hospital Center for treatment of cuts on her head.

-A 34-year-old man fought off three thieves on Waverly Avenue near Fulton Street on March 28 at 2:30 p.m. He told police that one thief came from behind, put him in a choke hold and threw him to the ground, then two more thieves tried to take his cellphone and bag. The man’s phone was broken during the struggle, and the thieves fled on Waverly Avenue. The man refused medical attention, police said.

Assault on Police Officer

Police arrested a 16-year-old girl on March 25 in the Lafayette Avenue C-train station after she allegedly punched a police officer in the mouth when he was arresting her brother. Police could not say what he was arrested for. She is charged with assault on a police officer, assault in the second and the third degrees, resisting arrest, menacing in the third degree, disorderly conduct and harassment in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.

Credit Card Fraud

A 36-year-old man told police on March 24 that someone had used his personal information to open a credit account with J.C. Penney on Nov. 30, 2012 and charged $489. Police could not say why he waited to file the report.

Mortgage Money Mystery

A 35-year-old woman told police on March 25 that she had sent three money orders, totaling $1,266, since February to pay a mortgage, but the money orders never reached the right person and had been cashed by someone else.

Stolen Camera Equipment

A worker at Starz Power Production LLC told police on March 25 that someone broke into a storage room in the Brooklyn Navy Yard and stole $4,300 worth of camera equipment sometime between Feb. 2 and March 18.

Theft on Subway

Police arrested a 17-year-old boy for allegedly stealing an iPhone during a police sting operation in the Fulton Street G-train station on March 26. The teenager is charged with grand larceny in the fourth degree, petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.

Thefts from Cars

-A 36-year-old man told police on March 27 that a North Face book bag with two iPhones, a mini survival kit and a fleece hat had been stolen from his car parked on Waverly Avenue near Flushing Avenue two days prior.

-A 41-year-old woman told police that she had parked her car on South Portland Avenue near Hanson Place on March 28 at 6:30 p.m. and came back 10 minutes later to find the front passenger side window broken and her black backpack, with her Chase Bank debit and credit cards, American Express card, New York State driver’s license and work identification missing.

-A 40-year-old man told police on March 28 that he had parked his car on South Portland Avenue near Hanson Place at 3:30 p.m. and came back at 10 p.m. to find his Kenneth Cole black work bag with his Motorola tablet and Blackberry missing from the trunk.

Bicycle Theft

A 41-year-old man told police on March 28 that he had left two bicycles worth $1,600 on a bicycle rack behind his building on Willoughby Avenue near Hall Street two days, before and came back to find them missing. Police said that surveillance video showed a man jumping over a fence and stealing the bikes at 2:15 a.m. on March 26.

Car Theft

A 64-year-old man told police on March 24 that he had parked his 1990 Honda Accord on Clermont Avenue near Willoughby Avenue two days earlier and came back to find it missing.
