Crime Report: Stolen Glasses, Smartphone Thefts and Robbery at Gunpoint

A worker told police that thieves stole $8,000 worth of eyeglass frames from a display case Cohen’s Fashion Optical at 395 Flatbush Avenue Extension on Feb. 14 at 3:30 p.m, according to surveillance footage.

Including the above crime, there were 17 felonies and 2 arrests reported in the 88th Precinct between Feb. 10 and Feb. 16. Locals also reported robbery at gunpoint, smartphone thefts and domestic assaults.

Robbery at Gunpoint

Two men held up a 33-year-old man at gunpoint when he was walking on Washington Park near Willoughby Avenue on Feb. 11 at 12 p.m. He told police that the two men brandished a gun and said, “Give me all your stuff.” He surrendered his yellow wallet, with $20 in cash, a MasterCard, HSBC debit card and his union card. The robbers ran off into Fort Greene Park.

Smartphone Thefts

-A 13-year-old boy told police that two men followed him into the Clinton-Washington G station and stole his LG cell phone on Feb. 11 at 3:45 p.m. He told police one man pushed him into the wall, said, “Who you be with? Who you beat up?” and snatched his cell phone. The other man acted as lookout. The pair fled out of the station.

-A 41-year-old woman told police that someone snatched her iPhone while she was walking on Lafayette Avenue near Carlton Avenue on Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. She said that she had been texting her husband and did not get a look at the thief, who ran into Fort Greene Park.

Robbery and Assault

Police arrested Faruq Santos, 19, on Feb. 11 for allegedly choking and punching an 18-year-old woman and stealing her iPhone earlier that day in the Walt Whitman Houses. The woman told police that they had been arguing, and Santos pinned her to the bed and hit her in the back of her head. She fled when Santos showed her a gun. No gun was recovered, police said.

Santos is charged with robbery in the first, second and third degrees, menacing in the second degree, criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation, petit larceny, criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, attempted assault in the third degree, menacing in the third degree and harassment in the second degree, according to the King’s County District Attorney’s office.

Assault

-Police arrested a 15-year-old girl for throwing bleach on her 17-year-old ex-boyfriend’s back on Feb. 10. He told police that he was leaving his home on Fulton Street at 8 a.m. that morning near Clermont Avenue when she confronted him and yelled, “You want to fight?” He received medical attention from Emergency Medical Technicians on scene.  The Kings County District Attorney’s office could not provide information on the charges because the girl is a minor.

Theft from Church

A worker at the Institutional Church of God in Christ at 170 Adelphi Street told police on Feb. 10 that $150 had been stolen from a safe overnight. The thief escaped down a rope from a second story window, police said.

Attempted Break In

A 44-year-old woman told police she was at home on South Oxford Street near Atlantic Avenue when a man tried to break in on Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. She told police that she heard a loud noise outside the apartment door. When she went to investigate, she saw the door moving. She screamed. The man ran and fled down South Oxford Street. Police said that he had removed a small window next to the entrance and opened the door from the outside.

Theft from Apartment Building

A 29-year-old man told police that someone had taken a package left by USPS in the hallway of his building on South Oxford Street near Hanson Place on Feb. 14. He said the package contained $50 worth of dog accessories.

Cell Phone Fraud

A 53-year-old woman told police on Feb. 10 that someone had used her personal information to open a Verizon cell phone account. She discovered the fraud when she received a bill for $161.90.

Theft from Store

A worker at the CVS Pharmacy at 218 Myrtle Avenue told police that $1,087 worth of Dove body wash, Roc facial cream, Nivea lotion and Axe deodorant had been stolen from the store on Feb. 20.

Theft on Subway

A 27-year-old man told police that a thief snatched his Samsung Galaxy tablet while he was riding the N train on Feb. 11 at 9:15 a.m. The thief ran off at the Atlantic Avenue station.

Theft of Handbag

A 35-year-old woman told police that her bag, with her dark brown wallet, U.S. passport and TD Bank Visa card, had been stolen from bench in Energy Fuel at 926 Fulton Street on Feb. 15 at 11:30 a.m. She had left her bag momentarily and when she came back it was gone.

Tire Theft

A 34-year-old man told police that all four tires and rims, worth $1,500, had been stolen from his car parked on Park Avenue near Adelphi Street on Feb. 14. He had parked his car on Feb. 12 at 5 p.m.

Theft from Vehicle

A 43-year-old man told police that his MacBook Air and Garmin GPS had been stolen from his car on Feb. 16. He had parked his car on Adelphi Street near Myrtle and when he came back he found the front passenger side window was smashed.

Car Theft

A 38-year-old man told police that his 1992 Honda Civic was stolen on Feb. 13. He had parked his car on Feb. 11 on Ashland Place near Saint Edwards Street and came back to find it missing.

Domestic Assault

A 48-year-old woman told police that her boyfriend slashed her left hand with a knife and punched her in the face on Feb. 16 at 4 p.m. at her home on Putnam Avenue near Downing Street. He fled the scene. She was taken to Brooklyn Medical Center.
