Crime Report: Stiletto Attack, Public Transit Robberies and Parked Car Theft
A stiletto shoe was the weapon of choice during an early morning assault on May 12. Hannah Roberts, 19, was arrested after she allegedly hit eight women between the ages of 17 and 21 with her stiletto as the group walked on Classon Avenue near Madison Street on their way home from a club, police said. During the attack, which occurred on May 12 at 3:40 a.m., Eleam Daryl, 21, who was with Roberts, allegedly punched and kicked the women. Roberts and Daryl also allegedly snatched an 18-year-old woman’s Samsung Galaxy cell phone during the attacks.
The women fell to the ground, sustaining cuts, bruising and swelling from the attacks. While some of the women were taken to Kings County Hospital, others were taken to Woodhull Hospital. Both Roberts and Daryl were arrested at the hospital later that morning, one of them at Kings County and the other at Woodhull.
The woman’s phone was not recovered, police said.
Both Roberts and Daryl were charged with assault in the second and third degrees, menacing in the third degree and harassment in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.
Including the crime above, 26 felonies and four arrests were reported in the 88th Precinct between May 7 and May 14, compared to 21 felonies and seven arrests the previous week. Two thefts occurred on buses last week, one of them marking the 11th theft on the B38 bus in the precinct since the beginning of the year. Other common reports last week included thefts from cars and trucks, and home burglaries.
Robberies on Busses
-When a 24-year-old woman got on the B38 bus at the South Portland and Lafayette Avenue stop on May 11 at 5:15 p.m., she noticed someone brushing against her, saying “I’m getting off here.” When she got off the crowded bus at the Adelphi and Lafayette Avenue stop, she noticed that her wallet — containing a Social Security card, Chase debit card, Capitol One credit card and an identification card — was missing from her purse. She later realized that someone made two transactions with her cards, purchasing a MetroCard worth $144.
-A 55-year-old woman who boarded the B25 bus on Lafayette Avenue and Fulton Street at 2:30 p.m. on May 4 realized her wallet was missing once she got off the bus, police said. The woman told police that she put her wallet inside her pocketbook after she paid the fare and didn’t see anyone take anything from it. The wallet contained $75 in cash, a driver’s license, a Visa debit card from Apple Bank, an MCU debit card and a library card.
Attempted Armed Robbery
A man pulled a knife on a 50-year-old woman in an attempt to snatch her Sprint cell phone, but he left empty-handed. The woman was waiting at the bus stop on Fulton Street at Fort Greene Place on May 7 at 10:50 p.m., when the man approached her, took out a knife and said, “I’m gonna cut your face, *****. Give me your phone.” When he tried to grab the phone, the woman hit him with it, cracking her phone. The woman then ran away toward DeKalb Avenue, still holding her phone.
In-school Attack
A 15-year-old student at The School for Career Development on Clermont Avenue between Fulton and Atlantic Avenues was arrested after she hit a school official in the face with a phone, causing pain and swelling. The official, 63, told the student that she could not come into the building anymore without her mother because of a previous incident, police said. The precinct’s juvenile crime desk has been notified, according to police.
Home Burglaries
-Someone stole a PlayStation 3, Wii, a Wii game, an HP laptop and an iPad mini from a Cumberland Walk apartment on May 12, police said. A 25-year-old woman told police that she had locked two locks on her apartment door at 4 p.m., and then left. When she returned at 8:30 p.m., only the bottom lock was locked. Police said that there were no signs of forced entry into the apartment.
-Someone stole three HP laptops, an Android tablet and a brown suitcase, totaling $1,650, from a Clermont Avenue home on May 7. A 42-year-old woman told police that she left the home at 7:15 a.m., and when she returned at 4:30 p.m., she found her back door, which she had locked before she left, was ajar. She also found a padlock she had placed on an inner door was missing. The woman told police that no one else has keys to her apartment. She added that two men are doing work in her backyard, but they only work there when she is home. One of the workers called the woman several times that day between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., asking when she would be home, because he was on his way. Police searched the area, but could not find the thieves or the woman’s belongings.
Office Theft
A 53-year-old woman told police that she was inside a Department of Mental Health office at the Flatbush Avenue Extension on May 10 at noon when someone opened her bag and took her driver’s license, Sears card, Macy’s card, Citibank credit card and MCU credit card. She told police that someone made several charges to the MCU card. The woman did not know her phone’s identification number at the time of the report. Police said there are no security cameras in the area.
Street Theft
Two men snatched another man’s iPhone and wallet as he walked in Fort Greene Park on DeKalb Avenue at South Portland Avenue on May 8 at 2 p.m. When the two thieves approached, one of them demanded, “Give me the phone, I got a taser.” The second thief added, “Give up the wallet.” They then grabbed the man’s iPhone and his green wallet, containing a New Jersey driver’s license, $200 in cash and a Discover card. The man’s Find My iPhone application detected that the phone was last located at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, but it has not yet been recovered.
Hotel Attack
A 32-year-old man was jumped, held at gunpoint and robbed outside of his room in the Washington Hotel on Washington Avenue at 7:20 a.m. on May 7. As he locked and unlocked his door, a man and woman pushed him into the room. While the man, wearing a skull cap, held the victim in a chokehold and pointed a gun at his head, the woman snatched his belongings, including a watch, a leather jacket, a cell phone and cash — worth a total of $1,220.
Attempted Car Break-ins
On May 8 at about 11:30 p.m., an officer responded to a call about a man looking into cars and fiddling with door handles on Hanson Place at Fort Greene Place. When he arrived, he noticed someone peering into a red 2001 Subaru Forrester and pulling on the door handle. The officer then found 11 hypodermic needles inside the bag that the man was carrying.
Yaniel Cruz-Ortiz, 30, was arrested on the scene and charged with attempted petit larceny, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.
Stolen Car
A man’s car was stolen from its parking spot on Myrtle Avenue near Hall Street on May 10, police said. The man told police that he parked his car at 7 p.m. before he went to eat at New Sapolo Restaurant. When he left the restaurant at 8:40 p.m., he noticed that his car wasn’t where he had parked it. He told police that he tried to find the car using 311, but was unsuccessful. He then got a ride home from his friend, went home and fell asleep. The following morning, his father, 48, the owner of the car, asked him what happened to the car. Both of the men returned to the parking spot and reported the car stolen. There were no signs of broken glass at the scene and a police search of the surrounding area was unsuccessful. Police also searched car impound logs, but found no information on the man’s car.
Stolen Motorcycle Found
Police found a motorcycle after it was taken from a Clinton Avenue parking spot in the early morning of May 11. A 52-year-old man told police that he parked his motorcycle on Clinton Avenue between DeKalb and Lafayette Avenues at 1 a.m., and when he returned at 8:10 a.m., it was gone. An officer noticed a piece of a broken lock on the ground where the motorcycle was parked. When the officer searched the area, he found the motorcycle on the corner of Washington Avenue and Greene Avenue, and notified the owner.
Thefts From Cars and Trucks
-Someone stole two hookahs and rolling paper from a business car parked on Steuben Street between Park and Myrtle Avenues, police said. The driver went into a store on May 10 at 9:40 p.m., and when he returned ten minutes later, all of the items were gone. A camera located at a nearby White Castle may be able to help in the investigation, police said.
-Someone stole $7,150 in cash, a black wallet, a CitiBank MasterCard and credit card, a Discover card and an American Express credit card from a truck parked on Myrtle Avenue, police said. The owner, who parked the car between Emerson Place and Steuben Street on May 10, told officers the theft happened between 10 and 10:30 a.m. Police are reviewing footage from a security camera that was facing the passenger side door.
-Someone broke the right passenger door lock of a Verizon company utility truck parked on South Oxford Street between Lafayette Avenue and Fulton Street and stole a Blackberry cell phone, police said. The employee parked the truck on May 7 at 11 a.m. while he was returning a phone, and came back at 1:40 p.m. The employee told police that the phone has a tracking system. There are no cameras near the spot where the truck was parked, according to police. Officers searched the area, but could not find the phone.
Unauthorized Account Use
A 17-year-old girl told police that on April 21 at 2 p.m., someone deposited $300 into her checking account four different times and then withdrew $600 three different times. She said that she had her card at the time of the fraudulent transactions, but representatives from the Chase Bank on Clinton Avenue advised her to destroy her card following the incident. The girl’s account now has a negative balance of $612.94. She told police that she made her last transaction on March 21. She did not report this unauthorized account activity until May 8, police said.
Domestic Dispute
A 32-year-old woman told police that she and her cousin were having an argument on South Portland Avenue near Hanson Place on May 5 at 5 a.m. when the woman’s sister hit her multiple times on the right leg with a baseball bat. Police did not notice any visible injuries and no arrests were made.
