Crime Report: Muggings and Other Thefts
On July 31 at about 11:15 p.m., a 28-year-old man was making a food delivery at a Monument Walk apartment in the Ingersoll Houses when five to seven strangers reportedly punched and kicked him, demanded money and made off with $200 in cash and the man’s electric mountain bike. The man suffered minor scrapes and bruises, police said.
A 15-year-old boy was arrested, but the other robbers are still at large, police said. The boy, whose name The Nabe is withholding because of his age, was charged with robbery in the second and third degrees, assault in the second and third degrees, grand larceny in the fourth degree, criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth and fifth degrees, petit larceny, menacing in the third degree and harassment in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.
Including the crime above, 19 felonies and 11 arrests were reported in the 88th Precinct last week. Thefts dominated the reports – four of them violent muggings, one of them at gunpoint and another at knifepoint on the subway. iPhones and wallets were the most commonly stolen items.
Robbery at Gunpoint
On Aug. 1 at 10:15 p.m. on the grounds of the Walt Whitman Houses, two men, one of them displaying a black gun, allegedly demanded that a 33-year-old man hand over his belongings, and snatched his cell phone and $3 in cash.
Michael Carpenter, 23, and Tirell Ryan, 21, were charged with robbery in the first and third degrees, grand larceny in the fourth degree, menacing in the second and third degrees, harassment in the second degree, petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.
Robbery with a Toy Gun
A 14-year-old boy was arrested after he allegedly pointed a toy gun at a 41-year-old man on Adelphi Street between Park and Flushing Avenues on July 29 at about 4 p.m. and stole his bicycle pegs.
The Nabe is withholding the teen’s name because of his age. He was charged with robbery in the second and third degrees, menacing in the second and third degrees, harassment in the second degree, petit larceny, criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and sale or possession of a toy or imitation firearm, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.
Knifepoint Robbery on Subway
A 22-year-old man told police that he was on a southbound G train on July 30 at 12:30 p.m. when a stranger threatened him with a gray knife, snatched his iPhone and ran out of the train at the Classon Avenue stop. The man told police that he got off the train at the Fourth Avenue – Ninth Street stop and reported the theft to MTA personnel. Police searched the area around the Classon Avenue station, but could not find the phone. A tracking application could not locate the phone because the phone was turned off, police said.
Street Muggings
-Four muggers allegedly came up behind a 67-year-old woman on Saint Edwards Street on July 29 at about 5:30 p.m., punched her, knocked her to the ground, and stole her U.S. passport, Chase Visa credit card, HSBC MasterCard and high blood pressure medication. The muggers fled northbound on Saint Edwards Street and westbound on Myrtle Avenue, police said. The woman sustained cuts on her right eyebrow, the right side of her face, knee, shoulder, hip and arm.
A 14-year-old and 15-year-old were arrested, and the other two muggers are still at large. The two teens were charged with robbery in the second and third degrees, assault in the second and third degrees, grand larceny in the fourth degree, criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth and fifth degrees, petit larceny, menacing in the third degree and harassment in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office. The Nabe is withholding both teens’ names because of their ages.
-Three thieves allegedly shoved a 44-year-old woman to the ground on DeKalb Avenue and South Elliott Place and stole her cell phone, purse and bicycle helmet on July 30 at about 4:45 a.m. Police were able to recover the cell phone, but not the purse – containing a New Jersey driver’s license, Brooklyn Hospital Center identification card, CitiBank MasterCard – and the helmet, cops said.
Hasan Stokes, 21, was arrested and charged with robbery in the second and third degrees, assault in the third degree, grand larceny in the fourth degree, criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth and fifth degrees, petit larceny, menacing in the third degree and harassment in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office. Derrick Montague, 16, was also arrested, but the DA’s office could not find charge information for him. The third robber is still at large, police said.
-A 31-year-old woman told police that she was walking on Carlton Avenue between Park and Myrtle Avenues on Aug. 1 at 9 p.m. when a man asked her for the time, punched her on the left side of the face, snatched her iPhone and fled. The woman complained of pain to the left side of her upper lip, but she refused medical attention, police said. Police searched the area but could not find the phone. A phone tracking application did not help in locating the phone, police said.
Stolen Cell Phones
-Two teens allegedly snatched a 42-year-old woman’s iPhone from her pocket when she was walking in Fort Greene Park on July 30 at 1:40 p.m. After the robbery, the woman ran after the teen holding the phone, who then handed it to the other teen. A tracking application was unable to find the woman’s phone, which was turned off after the theft.
-Tyquan Solomon, 18, was arrested after he pulled a Nokia cell phone out of a 15-year-old boy’s pocket as he walked on the grounds of the Walt Whitman Houses on Aug. 2 at about 7 p.m. Solomon was accompanied by a group of teenage boys who surrounded the victim as he was on his way to a video game store.
The Kings County District Attorney’s office could not provide charge information for Solomon.
Elevator Attack and Robbery
A 68-year-old man told police that two men attacked him in the elevator of his Cumberland Walk apartment and stole $460 from his pants pocket on Aug. 3 at 10 p.m. When the man attempted to get off the elevator at the 11th floor, the men allegedly blocked him and punched his face, causing a large cut on his right eyebrow, and fled, police said. The victim was taken to the Brooklyn Hospital Center, police said. Police searched the area but could not find either of the attackers.
Women’s Shelter Assault
Yolanda Lane, 36, was arrested after she allegedly hit a fellow Tillary Street Women’s Shelter resident over the head with a food tray following an argument on July 31 at about 1 p.m. The victim received medical attention, but had no visible injuries and did not complain of pain, police said.
The Kings County District Attorney’s office could not provide charge information for Lane.
Stolen Wallets
-A 16-year-old boy told police that he was shopping at Emerson Grocery on Myrtle Avenue between Emerson Place and Steuben Street on July 29 at 4 p.m. when he accidentally dropped his wallet. When he got home and realized he did not have the wallet, he returned to the store at 5:30 p.m., where he was informed that that a thief picked up his wallet and fled. Police searched the area but could not find the wallet or the thief.
-A 33-year-old woman told police that she was waiting on the southbound platform at the Nevins Street subway station on Aug. 2 at 7:10 a.m. when a man came up behind her, snatched her wallet from her left hand and fled. The wallet contained $500 in cash, monthly MetroCards, a New York State driver’s license, a Thai national identification card and an Amex credit card. Police searched the area but could not find the thief. No fraudulent usage was reported on the woman’s credit cards, but she cancelled the cards as a precaution, police said.
Stolen Bike
A 31-year-old man told police that someone stole his bike, which was latched to his car on Willoughby Avenue near Pratt Institute on July 21 between 10 and 11:15 p.m. There was no damage to the car, police said.
Stolen Car
A 34-year-old woman told police that she parked her 1994 Ford on Hall Street between Park and Myrtle Avenues on July 28 at 9 p.m. When he returned the following day at 7 a.m., the car was gone. There was no broken glass at the scene, police said. Cops searched the area but could not find the car.
Thefts from Cars
A 35-year-old woman told police that she parked her SUV on Atlantic Avenue near Classon Avenue on Aug. 4 at 2:35 a.m., and when she returned at 3:50 a.m., the side window was broken and a Coach bag, Chase bank credit card, Electronic Benefit Transfer card and house keys were missing from inside.
Construction Site Burglary
On Aug. 1 at about 3:15 a.m., Kyle Birch, 28, and Naheem Birch, 25, allegedly entered a construction site on Adelphi Street between Willoughby and DeKalb Avenues and stole a stack of copper sheets and photos of the copper sheets. When an officer approached them, they started to run away. The officer caught up to them, when both men flailed their arms and refused to be cuffed.
Both burglars were arrested and charged with destruction or removal of property in buildings or structures and resisting arrest, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office. The DA’s office could not confirm the relationship between the two men.
Home Burglary
A 36-year-old man told police that on the morning of Aug. 1, someone stole $1,200 in cash from the 16th floor apartment he rented and shared with two other people on Willoughby Avenue just off Pratt Institute’s campus. He noticed that the cash was taken from a wallet on the couch after a friend stopped by the apartment at 8 a.m. to pick up his belongings. Police searched the area but could not find the cash, and there are no security cameras nearby, cops said.
