Crime Report: Arrest in Applebee’s Attack, Thefts from Cars and Assaults
Police arrested a 17-year-old boy on Feb. 26 they suspect as one of three teens who allegedly slashed two men at an Applebee’s restaurant on Flatbush Avenue Extension four days before. Cops arrested the two other suspects, ages 15 and 17, on Feb. 22. The teenagers allegedly slashed one man in the neck and another in the arm. The Kings County District Attorney’s office could not disclose charges in the latest arrest because the suspect is a minor.
Including the above crime, 15 felonies and three arrests were reported in the 88th Precinct between Feb. 24 and March 2. Locals also reported assaults, thefts from cars and smartphone thefts.
Home Invasion and Assault
A 50-year-old man told police that two men had punched him, pummeled him with a hammer and stole his wallet and cellphone in his home on Gates Avenue near Washington Avenue on March 1. He said he opened his door and the attackers rushed him yelling, “Where’s my money?” He said they took his wallet, with $200, from his pants pocket and grabbed his cellphone from the kitchen table. He told police that he knew one of the men by his nickname, “Quick.” He was treated at the scene by Emergency Medical Technicians.
Smartphone Thefts
-A 48-year-old woman told police that a man shoved her to the ground and snatched her Samsung Galaxy Note smartphone from her hand as she was walking on Clermont Avenue near Park Avenue on March 1 at 10 p.m.
-A 20-year-old woman told police that someone came from behind and snatched her iPhone while she was walking on Lafayette Avenue near South Portland Avenue on March 2 at 6:40 p.m.
Stolen Bicycle
Police arrested David Caquis, 41, for allegedly stealing a $1,500 Jamis bicycle on Feb. 26. A 48-year-old woman told police Caquias stole her bike from her home on South Portland Avenue near Fulton Street that day at 2:20 p.m. Caquias, said to be on parole after a second-degree burglary conviction, was charged with burglary in the second and third degrees, criminal trespass in the second and third degrees, petit larceny, criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree and trespass, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.
Thefts from Bank Accounts
-A 71-year-old woman told police on Feb. 24 that someone had withdrawn $1,198 from her Alaska Federal Credit Union savings account between Dec. 16 and Feb. 12. She told police that no one else had her card or is authorized to use her account.
-A 27-year-old woman told police on Feb. 25 that after she lost her wallet in April 2013, someone had started depositing checks to her Chase bank account and withdrew $1,600 in August. She said that the bank did not charge her and that someone had also opened a NetSpend prepaid debit card in her name.
Thefts from Cars
-A 38-year-old woman told police on Feb. 24 that her Toshiba laptop and shoes were stolen from her car parked on Waverly Avenue near Willoughby Avenue. She told police she had parked her car on Feb. 22 at 10 p.m. and came back two days later to find the passenger side window broken.
-A man told police on Feb. 25 that $500 worth of tools and two Garmin GPS devices had been stolen from his van parked at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Clermont Avenue. He told police that he had parked the van on Feb. 23 and came back two days later to discover the passenger side door lock had been removed and his tools missing.
-A 31-year-old woman told police her purse, containing a black Coach wallet and an iPad, had been stolen from her car on Hanson Place near South Elliot Place on Feb. 25. She reported that she had parked the car at 4:30 p.m. that day and when she came back 30 minutes later the passenger side window was broken and her purse gone.
-A 40-year-old woman told police that her backpack with her HP laptop, Windows Surface tablet and schoolbooks had been stolen from her car parked on Willoughby Avenue near Emerson Place on Feb. 26. She said she had parked her car at 8 a.m. and when she returned at 3 p.m. the rear passenger window was broken and her backpack gone. She said that someone had seen the thief going through her backpack in the lobby of 921 Myrtle Avenue and had called her using a business card the thief dropped on the ground.
Theft at Restaurant
A 26-year-old woman told police on Feb. 27 that she had left her Madewell tote bag with her Marc Jacobs wallet on a chair to use the restroom at Putnam’s Pub and Cooker at 419 Myrtle Avenue on Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. and came back to find it missing. She told police that someone had used her credit card.
Breaking Cellphone
Police arrested Migdalia Nieves, 49, at the Tillary Street Women’s Shelter on March 1 for allegedly grabbing a 26-year-old fellow resident’s Samsung Galaxy Exhibit smartphone and throwing it to the ground, causing more than $250 of damage. Nieves is charged with robbery in the third degree, grand larceny in the fourth degree, criminal mischief in the fourth degree and petit larceny, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.
Car Theft
A 70-year-old man told police on Feb. 24 that he had parked his 1993 Dodge Caravan on Vanderbilt Avenue near Park Avenue on Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. and came back the next morning at 8 a.m. to find it gone.
Family Assault
A 34-year-old woman told police that her brother punched her and threatened to kill her during a fight in their home in the Walt Whitman Houses on Feb. 25 at 10:15 p.m. She told police that she was arguing with her brother over a plastic bag on his bedroom floor when he started punching her in the face, saying, “I’m going to kill you, you’re going to die.” She said that she fled the apartment after he went into the kitchen to get a knife and tried to stab her.
