Crime Report: Home Burglaries and Domestic Disputes
On July 10 at 2:10 a.m., two passengers allegedly refused to pay a taxi driver, threatened him with a knife and ran out of the car and into a building on Washington Avenue between Clifton Place and Lafayette Avenue. The driver had picked up the two men on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. There are no security cameras inside the taxi, police said.
Including the crime above, 17 felonies and six arrests were reported in the 88th Precinct last week, compared to 20 felonies and eight arrests the previous week. Domestic disputes and home burglaries were the most common reports in the nabe. There were no reported thefts on the B38 bus or assaults at the Tillary Street Women’s Shelter, ending, at least temporarily, long-running neighborhood crime trends.
iPhone Theft
A 30-year-old woman told police that she was walking east on Lafayette Avenue on July 10 at 8:25 p.m. when two men approached her, took her iPhone 5 and fled south on Clermont Avenue. Officers searched the area but could not find the phone, and a phone tracking application showed that the phone is offline, police said. The victim could not provide the phone’s identification number at the time of the report.
Home Burglaries
-On July 14 at about 5 p.m., three teens allegedly entered a home on South Elliott Place between DeKalb and Lafayette Avenues and stole a Nikon camera with a zoom lens, an Apple MacBook Pro, a Kodak camera with a black case, a white purse and a soda stream canister. When an officer attempted to arrest the teens, they allegedly pushed him and started to run away.
Tyrone Dicks, 17, Jermaine Matthews, 16, and Kayne Harris, 16, were arrested and charged with burglary in the third degree, grand larceny in the fourth degree, criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth and fifth degrees, criminal trespass, trespass, petit larceny and resisting arrest, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.
-When a 32-year-old woman returned from the hospital on July 14 at 10:30 a.m., the door to her Clinton Avenue apartment was unhinged and several of her belongings – worth $5,950 total – were gone, she told police. The stolen items, which were inside the woman’s closet, included a MacBook Pro, an iPhone 4s, a 24-carat gold earrings set, a 24-carat gold bangle bracelet and a pearl earrings and necklace set. The woman’s sister, who lives with her, told police that she did not notice that the door was unhinged or that the belongings were missing.
-A 24-year-old woman told police that she left her laptop on the windowsill in her Cumberland Street apartment on July 14 at 8 p.m., and when she returned at 9:30 p.m., it was gone. Police searched the area but could not find the laptop.
Theft from Baby Carriage
A 34-year-old woman told police that on July 10 between 9 and 11 a.m., someone stole her gold leopard-print wallet, containing $70 in cash, a driver’s license and Bank of America credit and debit cards from the bottom of her baby carriage on Waverly Avenue between Greene and Gates Avenues. The thief made several purchases with the cards at Bloomingdale’s, the woman told police.
Swipe While Asleep
Someone stole an 18-year-old’s wallet when he fell asleep at a Washington Avenue laundromat on July 3 at about 12:15 p.m., police said. The wallet contained $37 in cash and a U.S. Navy identification card and federal debit card. Although there were no fraudulent charges on his debit card, the teen cancelled the card, he told police.
Thefts from Cars
A 73-year-old woman told police that she parked her car on Clinton Avenue at Gates Avenue at 12:30 p.m. on July 13, and when she returned at 1:40 p.m., she realized that someone went through the car’s open back window and stole her purse. The purse contained $60, a driver’s license and registration and a Bank of America debit card.
Car Thefts
A 1997 Honda Civic was stolen from Washington Avenue between Park and Myrtle Avenues between 6 and 9 p.m. on July 7, police said. Officers did not find broken glass on the ground. When officers searched the area, they could not find the car.
An 89-year-old man told police that he parked his car on Washington Avenue on July 8 at 8 p.m., and when he returned the next day at 8:30 a.m., it was gone. Police searched the area but could not find the car.
Motorcycle Theft
A man told police that his motorcycle was in his Clinton Avenue backyard on July 10 at 1 a.m., and when he checked again at 6 a.m., it was gone. The motorcycle had two chains, one on the front wheels and one on the back wheels, and both were gone, the owner told police. Officers searched the area but could not find the motorcycle.
Computers and Security Camera Stolen
The owner of Chance Eleven, a lounge on Fulton Street between Vanderbilt and Clinton Avenues, told police that surveillance video revealed three of his employees stealing Toshiba, HP and Compaq laptops, HP and Dell desktop computers and another security camera from the business between 3:20 and about 7:20 p.m. on June 12. The owner had left the three employees to close up the business, he told police. The front door and all windows to the lounge were locked, the owner told police.
Heroin Possession
When officers arrested Anthony Coiro, 21, for allegedly stealing cases of assorted liquors from a truck in front of The Greene Grape on Fulton Street on July 11 at 3:30 p.m., they found that he was carrying 25 decks of heroin and two hypodermic needles.
Coiro was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third and seventh degrees, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.
Trespassing at Condos
Someone cut a fence at the Clinton Hill Condominiums on Grand Avenue, went into the backyard and broke the lock on a shed, between July 13 at 7 p.m. and July 14 at 10:30 a.m, police said. It is unclear whether anything was stolen, according to police. Officers spoke to several residents who were not able to provide additional information. Police said they would question maintenance personnel to determine whether anything was stolen.
Fraudulent Account Usage
A 62-year-old Lafayette Avenue resident told police that someone used her MCU bank account information to withdraw a total of $7,828 from ATM machines at different banks from November 2012 until June 4. She told police that she never gave her bank account or Social Security numbers to anyone. She still has her MCU card with her, police said.
Domestic Disputes
-A 24-year-old woman told police that her boyfriend took her Samsung Galaxy cell phone and debit card from her pocketbook in an Ingersoll Houses apartment on July 13 about 5 p.m. When the woman attempted to take her phone back, her boyfriend allegedly punched her in the mouth, injuring her lower lip. The woman received medical attention, police said.
-An argument between two women, Melika Byrd, 24, and Vean J. Drax, 27, turned violent when they allegedly flung chairs at each other inside an Emerson Street apartment on July 10 at 5:30 p.m. Byrd also allegedly punched Drax in the mouth, and Vean allegedly dragged Byrd down the stairs and made verbal threats. Drax suffered bleeding and a laceration on her lip, and Byrd suffered redness and a laceration on her right arm. Both women received medical attention at the scene, police said.
Both women were charged with domestic assault in the third degree, attempted assault in the third degree, menacing in the second and third degrees, harassment in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.
-Jimmy L. Barnes, 35, was arrested after he allegedly threw a bag filled with assorted items at a 30-year-old woman inside an apartment on Clinton Avenue between Fulton Street and Atlantic Avenue on July 14 at 11:40 a.m., police said. Barnes also allegedly told the woman that he would kill her, police said. The woman sustained redness on her face and neck, according to police.
Barnes was charged with assault in the third degree, attempted assault in the third degree, menacing in the third degree and harassment in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.
