Councilman Lander Reunites Sandy Volunteers For Dinner Tuesday

When Hurricane Sandy devastated so many of our neighboring communities, Slope residents immediately jumped into action, donating their time and resources to help those in need. Now one year later, Councilman Brad Lander is reuniting those volunteers for a dinner at Congregation Beth Elohim.

“This community came together and created a space of comfort among so much disruption,” said Councilman Lander on his website, “what evacuee and temporary Park Slope Armory resident Miriam Eisenstein-Drachler called ‘courtesy, gentleness, and goodness beyond description.’

“We will share dinner,” he continued, “reconnect, and reflect on what was such a meaningful time for so many of us.”

The dinner, scheduled for Tuesday, November 12, from 7pm to 9pm, will be catered by Masbia Soup Kitchen, who provided meals to the Armory evacuees throughout the storm. Guests can also look for artwork by evacuees, music and photographs taken during the relief effort.

To RSVP for the dinner, visit Councilman Lander’s website.

If you’d like to come early, there will also be a writing workshop at 6pm with the New York Writers Coalition, where volunteers can put their Sandy stories to paper. No writing experience is necessary to participate, and all supplies will be provided. There are only a limited number of spots available for the writing workshop, though, so be sure to email caron@artsanddemocracy.org to RSVP.
