Renovations Begin On Slain Detective’s Home
Coinciding with the slain officer’s 33rd birthday, a home makeover is underway for the family of Detective Wenjian Liu.
The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Tower Foundation, which raised more than $880,000 to help the Liu and Ramos families pay off their mortgages and renovate their homes, began construction Thursday on the West 6th Street house in Gravesend where Detective Liu once lived with his wife and parents, reports the New York Daily News.
“Tunnel to Towers has demonstrated their commitment to our family by paying off our mortgage, but also to return and renovate our home for us,” Lui’s widow Pei Xia Chen said during a news conference in front of the home on Tuesday. “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
Detective Liu and his partner, Detective Rafael Ramos, were gunned down outside a Brooklyn housing project on December 20.
The renovation is expected to cost $100,000 and will replace the home’s roof, windows and siding, and upgrade the air-conditioning system.
“Anything that can bring them a little joy and comfort,” said Tunnel to Towers Chairman Frank Siller. “They already have enough to deal with.”
