Congregation Beth Elohim Celebrates Completion Of Sanctuary Restoration

The last pieces of scaffolding have been removed from around the sanctuary of Congregation Beth Elohim, 274 Garfield Place at 8th Avenue, and CBE will toast the completion of the work this Friday, August 2 after Shabbat services, which begin at 6:30pm in the chapel, followed by a gathering on the steps at 7:30pm.

The sanctuary was built in 1909, and served the congregation well for 100 years, until the roof collapsed in 2009. CBE launched The Journey Home to help raise funds for the multi-million dollar restoration, which included the dome, parapets, and roof. CBE also won a $250,000 Partners in Preservation grant to fix the sanctuary’s stained glass windows.

Though the sanctuary was able to reopen and has hosted services and events, the scaffolding has hidden the historic building until it was finally all removed yesterday. We’re glad to see the beautiful building in its entirety again!
