Confusing Parking Signs Fixed On Prospect Park West

City transportation officials are taking down a confusing parking sign on Prospect Park West at 9th Street that raked in over $70,000 in fines last year, The Daily News reports.

The four spots in question, according to the confusing signs that were originally pointed out last year by the newspaper, are not available for parking between 8am-10pm from April 1 to September 30. However, because drivers can park there during the winter, the spots look like any other parking spot and are subject to the street cleaning guidelines listed on a sign directly below the “No Standing” sign.

Parking in the spots during the summer could get you a $115 fine, and the city issued 625 of them last year, according to a tally done by Brooklyn College professor Greg Smithsimon based on information available on the city’s OpenData website. Compare that to the 47 tickets issued last year for parking in the bus stop across the street.

Initially, the Department of Transportation refused to add better signs to the confusing corner, but the department changed course after The Daily News article was published earlier this month, and they agreed to take down the seasonal “No Standing” sign.

Curious about the local politics involved in this? Neighbor Doug Gordon, aka Brooklyn Spoke, had a good exchange with Community Board 6 on Twitter:
